The relatively recently developed conical screw compressor is a type of rotary-screw compressor using a different topology from the typical dual-screw type. In effect it can be thought of as a conical spiral extension of a gerotor, although the exact geometry is somewhat different due to the angular offset. Because of this it does not have the inherent "blow-hole" leakage path which in typical screw compressors is responsible for significant leakage through the assembly and makes low-speed operation impractical. This theoretically allows much smaller rotors to have practical efficiency since at smaller sizes the leakage area does not become as large a portion of the pumping area as in straight screw compressors. In conjunction with the decreasing diameter of the cone shaped rotor this also allows much higher compression ratios to be achieved in a single stage. [1] [2]
A significant impediment to production is the machining of the outer rotor to the tolerances required. Although the inner rotor can be manufactured with precise CNC machines using common methods, the outer rotor presents significant difficulties due to the restricted access to the interior for precision tooling, and assembling the outer rotor from easier to machine segments presents its own problems. The cost of units is currently very high, but development is ongoing, development is primarily being performed by VERT Rotors who hold patents on this topology. [3] [4]

The Quasiturbine or Qurbine engine is a proposed pistonless rotary engine using a rhomboidal rotor whose sides are hinged at the vertices. The volume enclosed between the sides of the rotor and the rotor casing provide compression and expansion in a fashion similar to the more familiar Wankel engine, but the hinging at the edges allows the volume ratio to increase. A geometrical indetermination of the Quasiturbine confinement stator shape allows for a variety of profiles and design characteristics. Unlike vane pumps, in which vane extension is generally important and against which the pressure acts to generate the rotation, the Quasiturbine contour seals have a minimal extension and the rotation does not result from pressure against these seals.

The Britalus rotary engine was invented in 1982 by Kenneth W. Porter, P.E., M.S.A.E, of King County, Washington. It operates on a modified Brayton cycle, but with continuous pulsed combustion, similar to that of a gas turbine. It can burn most commonly available hydrocarbon fuels and features the high compression ratio (14:1) typical of a Diesel cycle. The engine is patented, US Patent 4336686 of 1982.
A gerotor is a positive displacement pump. The name gerotor is derived from "generated rotor." A gerotor unit consists of an inner and an outer rotor. The inner rotor has n teeth, while the outer rotor has n + 1 teeth, with n defined as a natural number greater than or equal to 2. The axis of the inner rotor is offset from the axis of the outer rotor and both rotors rotate on their respective axes. The geometry of the two rotors partitions the volume between them into n different dynamically-changing volumes. During the assembly's rotation cycle, each of these volumes changes continuously, so any given volume first increases, and then decreases. An increase creates a vacuum. This vacuum creates suction, and hence, this part of the cycle is where the inlet is located. As a volume decreases, compression occurs. During this compression period, fluids can be pumped or, if they are gaseous fluids, compressed.

A variable-speed drive (VSD) air compressor is an air compressor that takes advantage of variable-speed drive technology.
