The Judo competition at the 1984 Summer Olympics continued the seven weight classes first used at the 1980 Games. With the open division, there were eight competitions. Japan returned to the top of the medal count, after boycotting the Moscow games. Because of the Soviet-led boycott of the Los Angeles games, several traditionally strong judo countries, including Cuba and the Soviet Union, did not participate. The Judo competition was held at California State University, Los Angeles.

Mircea Frăţică is a Romanian retired middleweight judoka who won the European title in 1982. Frăţică also won bronze medals at the 1980 European Championships, 1983 World Championships and 1984 Olympics. Between 1976 and 1985 was coached by Clubul Sportiv Nitramonia Fagaras founder and coach, Gheorghe (Gelu) Gujbă, under whose direction he marked the above achievements. Frătică later joined Nitramonia Fagaras as a coach alongside Gujbă before moving on to Liberty Oradea where his team won the 1999 European Cup Championship.

The World Judo Championships are the highest level of international judo competition, along with the Olympic judo competition. The championships are held once every year by the International Judo Federation, and qualified judoka compete in their respective categories as representatives of their home countries. Bekir Özlü is an Olympian Georgian-born Turkish judoka competing in the 60 kg division. The 1.62 m tall sportsman is a member of Kocaeli BB Kağıt SK. Bekir Ozlu née Betkil Shukvani was born in Georgia but changed to Turkey in 2015. For Georgia he won European medals U17 and U20 and silver at the Senior European in 2011 in Istanbul. He won the European team title with Georgia in 2007. He won World Cups since 2011 and the Grand Slam of Rio in 2012. Ozlu won gold at the European Open in Minsk in 2017. He captured a bronze medal at the Grand Prix in Zagreb in 2017. Ozlu took gold at the Grand Prix The Hague in 2017.

Andreea Ștefania Chițu is a Romanian judoka who competes in the women's ‍–‍52 kg category. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she was defeated in the second round by Ilse Heylen, having beaten Soraya Haddad in the first round. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, she beat Laura Gómez in her first match, before losing to Odette Giuffrida in the quarter-finals. Because Giuffrida reached the final, Chițu entered the repechage. She was eliminated in the repechage by Érika Miranda.
