Consuelo Gloria Morales Elizondo (born March 1948) is a Mexican human rights activist, founder and director of the organization Ciudadanos en Apoyo a los Derechos Humanos, A.C. (CADHAC), known in English as Citizens in Support of Human Rights.

Life and career

Morales Elizondo was born in Monterrey, Mexico. [1] She has a license in social work from the Escuela de Trabajo Social Vasco de Quiroga and a Master's degree in Human Rights and Democracy from the Latin American Social Sciences Institute, and is a sister of the Congregation de Notre Dame of the Augustinian Canons. [1] [2]

Her first human rights work was with indigenous people in Veracruz and with street children in Mexico City. After returning to Monterrey in 1992, in April 1993, with other nuns, she founded Ciudadanos en Apoyo a los Derechos Humanos, A.C. (CADHAC), which she leads. [1] [3] [4] She works for the rights of people caught up in Mexico's war on drugs, including the desaparacidos (disappeared people) in the state of Nuevo León, [1] and also to build respect between the sexes. [5] She has been a member of several groups and commissions on human rights, including the board of OXFAM Mexico. [2]

Honors

Morales Elizondo has received awards including: the national award for equality and against discrimination of the National Council to Prevent Discrimination, in 2010, [2] [5] the Alison Des Forges Award for Extraordinary Activism of Human Rights Watch, in 2011, [1] [3] [6] the 2013 Medal of Civic Merit from the state of Nuevo León in 2014, [7] the second Gilberto Bosques Human Rights Award by the Embassies of France and Germany in Mexico, in 2015, [8] and the 2015 National Human Rights Award of the National Commission of Human Rights. Gilberto Bosques Saldívar was a Mexican diplomat and before that a militant in the Mexican Revolution and a leftist legislator. As a consul in Marseille, Vichy France, Bosques took initiative to rescue tens of thousands of Jews and Spanish Republican exiles from being deported to Nazi Germany or Spain, but his heroism remained unknown to the world at large for some sixty years, until several years after his death at the age of 102. For about two decades after World War II, Bosques served as Mexico's ambassador to several countries. Since 2003, international recognition has been accruing to him. In 1944, he described his efforts thus: "I followed the policy of my country, of material and moral support to the heroic defenders of the Spanish Republic, the stalwart paladins of the struggle against Hitler, Mussolini, Franco, Petain, and Laval."

Iduvina Hernández is a Guatemalan journalist and internationally-known human rights activist. Her work has involved analyzing democracy and state security. Specifically, her research has focused on the violence which occurred during the Guatemalan Civil War and rebuilding the structures to support the country's democracy. In her childhood, her father was threatened by the National Civil Police and her husband was killed in 1984. She interrupted her education after his murder and moved to Mexico, living in exile there and working as a journalist until 1989. After her return to Guatemala, Hernández wrote articles focused on the war and counterinsurgency for Crónica magazine.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Marcelina Bautista</span> Mexican domestic worker and activist

Marcelina Bautista Bautista is a Mexican human rights activist and trade union organizer. She worked as a domestic worker for 22 years, starting at the age of 14. She put herself through school, graduating from the Ibero-American University and started organizing her fellow workers. She founded the organizations Centro de Apoyo y Capacitación para Empleadas del Hogar in 2000 and Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores y Trabajadoras del Hogar (SINACTRAHO) in 2015.

Ciudadanos en Apoyo a los Derechos Humanos, A.C. (CADHAC), also known in English as Citizens in Support of Human Rights, is a Mexican non-governmental organization founded in 1993 based in Monterrey, Nuevo León by Consuelo Morales Elizondo. Its main objective is the promotion and defense of human rights in the state of Nuevo León and northern Mexico.
