Malibu Comics company

Malibu Comics Entertainment, Inc. was an American comic book publisher active in the late 1980s and early 1990s, best known for its Ultraverse line of superhero titles. Notable titles under the Malibu label included The Men in Black, Ultraforce, The Night Man and Exiles.

The Ultraverse was a comic book imprint published by the American company Malibu Comics which is owned by Marvel Comics. The Ultraverse was a shared universe in which a variety of characters—known within the comics as "Ultras"—acquired super-human abilities.

Though it has never been truly confirmed, it is heavily implied in Freex that the nurse nicknamed "Wetware Mary" (the one responsible for creating the Freex and other superhuman Ultras by injecting babies with nanotechnology) was the same woman who would eventually become Contrary. Both were humans who had access to the advanced technology of the Fire People, and both manipulated people in various ways for their own agendas.

Nanotechnology ("nanotech") is manipulation of matter on an atomic, molecular, and supramolecular scale. The earliest, widespread description of nanotechnology referred to the particular technological goal of precisely manipulating atoms and molecules for fabrication of macroscale products, also now referred to as molecular nanotechnology. A more generalized description of nanotechnology was subsequently established by the National Nanotechnology Initiative, which defines nanotechnology as the manipulation of matter with at least one dimension sized from 1 to 100 nanometers. This definition reflects the fact that quantum mechanical effects are important at this quantum-realm scale, and so the definition shifted from a particular technological goal to a research category inclusive of all types of research and technologies that deal with the special properties of matter which occur below the given size threshold. It is therefore common to see the plural form "nanotechnologies" as well as "nanoscale technologies" to refer to the broad range of research and applications whose common trait is size. Because of the variety of potential applications, governments have invested billions of dollars in nanotechnology research. Through 2012, the USA has invested $3.7 billion using its National Nanotechnology Initiative, the European Union has invested $1.2 billion, and Japan has invested $750 million.

Fictional character biography

Contrary was first seen (under that name) as leader of the Academy of the New Elite, a small group of teenage Ultras (including Feline and Flygirl) living inside a high-tech base hidden in Mount Shasta. She arranges events so that the Freex (the presumed result of her genetic tampering) would find their way to Mt. Shasta and engage in combat with the Academy trainees, just so she could observe their powers and fighting abilities. When the Freex proved more capable than she thought, they escape, even convincing one of Contrary's Academy students (Cayman) to leave with them. Boomboy, one of the group, stays behind in order to gain an education. Needless to say, Contrary was quite furious at Cayman leaving.

Flygirl is a fictional character. She was introduced in Malibu Comics' Freex #10 (1994) as a member of the Academy of the New Elite, an organization created by Contrary to teach young Ultras to control their powers.

Mount Shasta Stratovolcano in California, United States of America

Mount Shasta is a potentially active volcano at the southern end of the Cascade Range in Siskiyou County, California. At an elevation of 14,179 feet (4321.8 m), it is the second-highest peak in the Cascades and the fifth-highest in the state. Mount Shasta has an estimated volume of 85 cubic miles (350 km3), which makes it the most voluminous stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc. The mountain and surrounding area are part of the Shasta–Trinity National Forest.

Freex is a short-lived comic book series from Malibu Comics. Created By Gerard Jones and Ben Herrera, it concerned a team of teenage superheroes in the Ultraverse.

Later, she meets the newest Academy member, Pixx, and encounters Hardcase and Ghoul. They had all independently discovered that the Fire People had stolen nuclear missiles and were planning to "take back" the surface world their ancestors had abandoned millennia ago. The group join together to form Ultraforce, but it was not a seamless fit.

Pixx is a fictional character from Malibu Comics, created by Gerard Jones and Jeff Parker. She first appeared in Giant-Size Freex #1.

Hardcase is a comic book series written by James Hudnall for Malibu Comics’ Ultraverse imprint, which lasted 26 issues. The series was about Tom Hawke, who became one of the first publicly known Ultras.

Ghoul is a character from Malibu Comics' Ultraverse continuity. He was created by Steve Gerber, R.R. Phipps, Dave Olbrich, Chris Ulm, and Tom Mason. Ghoul first appeared in Exiles #1.

The Ultraforce recruited first Prototype, and then Prime, who fit Contrary's bill perfectly; powerful, young, not too bright, and easily manipulated. Contrary essentially tricked Hardcase into becoming the leader, and the group received official sanction from then-President Bill Clinton. Contrary tried to make peace with the Freex in order to recruit them, but they were uninterested in her offer.

Prototype is the name of two fictional characters from Malibu Comics' Ultraverse. The original Prototype was Bob Campbell, who was replaced by the second Prototype, Jimmy Ruiz. These events happened before the first issue of Prototype and Ruiz was then the first Prototype revealed to the readers.

Prime is a superhero created by Bob Jacob, Gerard Jones, Len Strazewski, and Norm Breyfogle. He debuted in Prime #1 under Malibu Comics' Ultraverse imprint, and was one of its flagship characters along with Mantra and Hardcase. The character design was credited to Bret Blevins. The character also appeared in the superhero group Ultraforce.

President of the United States Head of state and of government of the United States

President of the United States (POTUS) is the title for the head of state and head of government of the United States of America. The president directs the executive branch of the federal government and is the commander-in-chief of the United States Armed Forces.

Contrary puts aside her differences when she helps the Freex bury one of their own, Michael Rafani AKA Plug. She offers space at her facility for his grave. During the funeral she also meets the new hero Nightman and ancient warrior known only as the 'Old Man'. When the Old Man asks why she doesn't take the Freex in under the 'wing' of the Ultraforce, Contrary says that she must be quiet about her role as a teacher of young Ultras in order to protect them.

Contrary's mind games cause a jealous Prime to leave the Ultraforce group. However, when the Ultraforce engages in conflict with the Fire People, Prime returns to render his aid. Contrary manages to calm the angry team members, and they implement a new plan; The Fire People agree to a truce, and are allowed ownership of their island kingdom.

Contrary suffers the death of her student Flygirl in the dimension spanning Godwheel incident. Flygirl had been working with Hardcase and doesn't survive a meeting with Lord Pumpkin. [1]

Black September

In the aftermath of the Black September Event, Contrary was confirmed to no longer exist due to the "Infinity Effect" (the wave of reality-altering energy released when the Black Knight used his sunsword to shatter Nemesis' crown and destroy the Ego Gem). However, it is possible, that much like the Jimmy Ruiz Prototype, she may have been shunted into the merged pocket universe containing both Ultraverse and Marvel Universe elements, such as a Janet Van Dyne whose superhero identity is the Black Widow, an Alec Swan whose nickname is the Black Night, and a Thor who looks more like the Norse interpretations of the character rather than his Marvel Universe counterpart.

Powers and abilities

Contrary can stimulate the pain and pleasure centers of the brain. She is also highly skilled in the repair and use of Fire People technology, such as her anti-gravity airship.

Appearances in Other Media

Contrary also appeared in the Ultraforce animated cartoon. She works with heroes such as Prime, Hardcase and Ghoul; they confront villains that include Lord Pumpkin and Rune.

Published by Malibu Comics for its Ultraverse line, the comic book Night Man gained his powers from an accident. A piece of shrapnel became embedded in his head after his vehicle was struck by a cable car that had been hit by a burst of energy known as a "jumpstart". The energy is later found to originate from The Entity, an alien starship which had crashed on the Moon. Night Man jumpstarted, but the passengers of the cable car were also, some of which went on to form The Strangers. This version of Johnny Domino, while not unconditionally telepathic, could hear evil thoughts, could see in the dark and did not require sleep. His costume and equipment were merely makeshift items from hardware stores and the like, plus a kevlar vest his father lent him. His father was a former police officer turned security guard at a San Francisco Coney Island-type amusement park called "Playland", based upon the real-life Playland.

The Ultraforce is a fictional superhero group that appears in comic books published by Malibu, and later Marvel, as well as an animated series produced by DIC. It has even been retconned as a place where both Rune of the Ultraverse and Adam Warlock of the main Marvel Universe lived in the distant past.
