According to Colin Meloy, as stated at the Pilgrimage Festival in Franklin, TN on September 27, 2015, Funk was originally given the middle name "Ryman" but a clerical error on his birth certificate resulted in his middle name being recorded as "Lyman."

Norfolk & Western is an American indie rock and folk/rock band from Portland, Oregon, United States. They are not to be confused with the fallen flag railroad of the same name. An essential part of their stage set-up and sound is a turn-of-the-century Victrola Grammaphone. Norfolk and Western began as the recording project of Adam Selzer with friends, including M. Ward, playing various instruments, and evolved over time to become a fully orchestrated band. In the early days Norfolk and Western's sound was whispery, intimate, elegant folk music laced with creaky old instruments and atmospheric sound collages. Their live shows often feature band members switching instruments, sometimes even mid-song, as well as film accompaniment.
Kaitlyn ni Donovan is an American classically trained violinist and composer of experimental music, dream pop, and film scores, hailing from Portland, Oregon. She is self-taught on a multitude of instruments and is known for unorthodox chord changes and lyrics peppered with dense language and romantic imagery. She sings in a style that is angelic and sparse and is sometimes compared to Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins. In the mid 1990s she performed regularly with a large group of players under her own name. These performances included strings, toy pianos, acoustic and electric instruments. This sound would become known as chamber pop or baroque pop in the Northwest music scene.

Portlandia is an American sketch comedy television series starring Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, set in and around Portland, Oregon, and spoofing the city's reputation as a haven for eccentric hipsters. The show was produced by Broadway Video Television and IFC Original Productions. It was created by Armisen and Brownstein, along with Jonathan Krisel, who directs it. It debuted on IFC on January 21, 2011.
Tender Loving Empire is an independent record label and local handicraft concept store based in Portland, Oregon. The record label side has established local and national recognition through a successful roster of indie rock and indie folk bands such as Typhoon, Loch Lomond, The Family Crest, Radiation City, Magic Sword, Y La Bamba and Willis Earl Beal. When the label partnered with Warner Music distributor ADA, President David Orleans called Tender Loving Empire “a major force in the vibrant Portland music scene”. Carrie Brownstein, of the band Sleater-Kinney and show Portlandia, called TLE in The Wall Street Journal a “dream boutique” for its collection of local artistry and music, both important to the indie rock culture of the Pacific Northwest.
The Operacycle was an American indie rock band from Portland, Oregon. Initially formed as a solo project by multi-instrumentalist Jordan Hudson, the act's sole full-length album, Warmer, was released in 2000.
Jeff London, is an American musician and songwriter from Queens, New York. He was a part of the Portland indie-folk music scene of the mid-nineties, inspired by artists such as Elliott Smith and Pete Krebs, and sharing stages with M. Ward, Colin Meloy, Sara Dougher, Ben Gibbard, and Ben Barnett. His album and compilation recordings on HUSH records and Jealous Butcher records from 1997 to 1999 established the connection between the sound of Portland indie-folk and a broader Portland-based songwriter school. London is a vocalist who plays acoustic and electric guitar, piano, bass, and harmonica. He is notable for his lyricism.
