Craig C. Cates (born Key West,Florida) is an American politician,retired businessman and former boat and car racing champion. Cates served as mayor of Key West from October 1,2009,to November 19,2018. Craig was married to Cheryl Hollen Cates who died of COVID-19 on December 2,2020. He also is the father of three girls,Tammy,Nicole,and Crystal Cates. He has four grandchildren,Taylor,Trevor,Andrew,and Riley. Some of Craig Cates' hobbies include yachting,fishing,and pulling lobster traps. Cates was succeeded by Teri Johnston after he did not run for reelection. [1]

The Florida Keys are a coral cay archipelago off the southern coast of Florida,forming the southernmost part of the continental United States. They begin at the southeastern coast of the Florida peninsula,about 15 miles (24 km) south of Miami and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West,the westernmost of the inhabited islands,and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas. The islands lie along the Florida Straits,dividing the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the Gulf of Mexico to the northwest,and defining one edge of Florida Bay. The southern part of Key West is 93 miles (150 km) from Cuba. The Keys are located between about 24.3 and 25.5 degrees North latitude.

For several decades,the powerful storm was the most intense Atlantic hurricane on record in terms of barometric pressure,until surpassed by Hurricane Gilbert in 1988,the strongest Atlantic hurricane on record in terms of 1-minute sustained winds,until surpassed by Hurricane Allen in 1980,and the strongest at landfall by 1-minute sustained winds,until it was tied by Hurricane Dorian in 2019. The Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge is part of the United States National Wildlife Refuge System,located in north Key Largo,less than 40 miles (64 km) south of Miami off SR 905. The 6,686 acre (27.1 km2) refuge opened during the year of 1980,under the Land and Water Conservation Fund Act of 1965 and the Endangered Species Act of 1973. It was established in order to protect critical breeding and nesting habitat for the threatened American crocodile and other wildlife. This area also includes 650 acres (2.6 km2) of open water in and around the refuge. In addition to being one of only three breeding populations of the American crocodile,the refuge is home to tropical hardwood hammock,mangrove forest,and salt marsh. It is administered as part of the National Key Deer Refuge which is also located in the Florida Keys.
The Ernest Hemingway House was the residence of American writer Ernest Hemingway in the 1930s. The house is situated on the island of Key West,Florida. It is at 907 Whitehead Street,across from the Key West Lighthouse,close to the southern coast of the island. Due to its association with Hemingway,the property is the most popular tourist attraction in Key West. It is also famous for its large population of so-called Hemingway cats,many of which are polydactyl.

The 1941 Florida hurricane was a compact but strong tropical cyclone that affected the Bahamas,Florida,and the southeastern United States in October 1941. The fifth known storm of the 1941 Atlantic hurricane season,it was first observed to the north of the Virgin Islands on October 3. The storm tracked generally westward,reaching peak winds of 120 miles per hour (193 km/h) before passing through the Bahamas. After weakening somewhat,the storm later passed across southern Florida with winds of 100 mph (161 km/h). The hurricane then emerged into the Gulf of Mexico as a tropical storm,but regained hurricane intensity and made another landfall along the Florida Panhandle. Turning northeast,it crossed Georgia and South Carolina,and entered the Atlantic Ocean on October 8.

Teri Johnston is an American politician. In November 2018 she was elected the mayor of Key West,becoming the first openly lesbian woman to be elected as a city mayor in Florida history. Johnston is the second woman to serve as mayor of Key West.
