Elwyn Crocker Jr. and Mary Crocker were two American children whose remains were discovered buried in their family's backyard in Effingham County, Georgia in December 2018. [1]

Victims

Elwyn Crocker Jr., age 14, disappeared in November 2016. [2] He was the older brother of Mary Crocker, who disappeared two years later, at age 13, in October 2018. Sometime before, the children's father, 49-year-old Elwyn Crocker Sr., and his wife (and the children's stepmother), 33-year-old Candice Crocker, had withdrawn each child from classes at South Effingham Middle School; they informed school officials that both siblings would be homeschooled. [3] Six years earlier, in 2012, Elwyn Crocker Sr. and his wife had received counseling from Effingham County's Department of Family and Children Services following reports that they were abusing Elwyn Crocker Jr. Both adults agreed to undergo therapy and take classes in parenting, and the department closed the case in 2013. [4] However, neither child was ever reported to be missing, and their disappearances were only discovered after the local police department received a tip from a family relative who believed that Mary Crocker was deceased. After police officers interviewed the children's father, they decided to search the grounds of the family's residence in Guyton, Georgia.

Human remains were discovered on the property on December 20, 2018, Mary Crocker's 14th birthday, and the Effingham County coroner noted that Elwyn Crocker Jr. would have been 17 years old. [5] The cause of death had not been determined for either child as of December 26. [6]

Suspects

Elwyn Crocker Sr. and Candice Crocker were arrested. Elwyn Sr. had recently worked in Rincon, Georgia, as a Santa for Walmart. Also arrested were three other adults who lived in the home: Candice Crocker's mother, Kim Wright, age 50; Wright's male companion, Anthony Prater, 55 years old; and Mark Anthony Wright, the brother of Candice Crocker. All five adults were charged with concealing a death as well as child cruelty. [3] . [7]

At the time of the arrests, a third child who lived in the home was taken into the care of Effingham County social services. [5]

Subsequent developments

Anthony Prater pleaded guilty to murder in February 2020, and will not face the death penalty. In late October of that year, the children's stepmother, Candice Crocker, pleaded guilty to murder, torture, and keeping both Elwyn Jr. and Mary in dog crates. She agreed to testify against her husband, mother, and brother to escape the death penalty. The trials of the three remaining defendants have not yet been formally scheduled by the court. [8]

At the time of the attack on the Groene family, Duncan was on the run from a child molestation charge in Minnesota.

Marie Noe was an American woman who was convicted in June 1999 of murdering eight of her children. Between 1949 and 1968, eight of the ten Noe children died of mysterious causes which were then attributed to sudden infant death syndrome. All eight children were healthy at birth and were developing normally. Two other children died of natural causes. Noe pleaded guilty in June 1999 to eight counts of second-degree murder, and was sentenced to 20 years' probation and psychiatric examination.

The Glynn County mass murder was discovered on August 29, 2009, when eight dead bodies were found at the New Hope Mobile Home Park in Glynn County, Georgia, near Brunswick. There were also two people found injured, one of whom later died of injuries.

John Albert Gardner III is an American convicted double murderer, rapist, and child molester. He confessed to the February 2009 rape and murder of 14-year-old Amber Dubois from Escondido, California, and the February 2010 rape and murder of 17-year-old Chelsea King from Poway, California, after he entered a plea agreement that spared him from execution. The Pike County Shootings, also known as the Pike County Massacre, occurred on the night of April 21–22, 2016, when eight people – all belonging to the Rhoden family – were shot and killed in four homes in Pike County, Ohio, near the village of Peebles, 50 miles (80 km) from Columbus and 60 miles (97 km) from Cincinnati. Their bodies were found later on April 22. In the early hours of August 13, 2018, in Frederick, Colorado, American oil field operator Christopher Lee Watts murdered his pregnant wife Shanann (34) by strangulation, and their two children Bella (4) and Celeste (3) by suffocation. He buried Shanann in a shallow grave near an oil-storage facility, and dumped his children's bodies into crude oil tanks. Watts initially maintained his innocence in his family's disappearance, but was arrested on August 15, after confessing in an interview with detectives to murdering Shanann. Months later he also admitted to murdering his children.

He signed with YoungBoy Never Broke Again's namesake record label, an imprint of Atlantic Records shortly after the release of his 2018 single, "I Remember". The song received platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and preceded his debut studio album, QPac (2020), which entered the Billboard 200 and contained his second platinum-certified song, "ABG". Wilson was the 1,500th person to be executed in the United States since capital punishment was resumed in 1976.

Javier Vega Jr. was an agent of the United States Border Patrol who was shot dead by Gustavo Tijerina Sandoval, an illegal alien from Mexico, near Santa Monica, Texas on August 3, 2014. His killer was sentenced to the death penalty, and Vega was honored as the namesake of a street in La Feria, Texas and a Border Patrol checkpoint in Sarita, Texas.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Billy Mansfield</span> American serial killer and sex offender

William "Billy" Mansfield Jr. is an American serial killer, child molester and sex offender, responsible for the murders of five women and girls between 1975 and 1980. He buried the bodies of four victims at the family home in Spring Hill, Florida, and later traveled with his brother to California, where he raped and strangled a Watsonville woman. He was convicted of the latter homicide, and later pleaded guilty to the previous murders to avoid the death penalty in Florida, receiving four life sentences.

Timothy Jones Jr. is an American murderer who killed his five children: Merah, Elias, Nahtahn, Gabriel, and Abigail Elaine, in their mobile home along South Lake Drive in Lexington County, South Carolina. Jones admitted to working Nahtahn to death and killed the other four children in a panic. Jones pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but the court rejected this plea. He was found guilty of five counts of murder in 2019 and was sentenced to death. As of 2022 he is awaiting execution on death row in South Carolina. The South Carolina Supreme Court denied his appeal.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Killing of Kenyatta Odom</span> Child murder in 1988

Kenyatta "KeKe" Odom, formerly known as Christmas Doe and Ware County Jane Doe, was a formerly unidentified murder victim whose decomposed remains were found in Millwood, Georgia on December 21, 1988. Her body was discovered inside a suitcase filled with cement that was placed inside of a television console and discarded on the side of a road. She was unidentified for 34 years until she was identified in November 2023.
