"In 1870 the number of Cuban immigrants increased to almost 12,000, of which about 4,500 resided in New York City, about 3,000 in New Orleans and 2,000 in Key West. The causes of these movements were both economic and political, which intensified after 1860, when political factors played the predominant role in emigration, as a result of deteriorating relations with the Spanish metropolis." [1]
Philadelphia in the 19th century had one of the lower immigration rates on the east coast when compared to more densely populated cities such as New York or Tampa. "Philadelphia reached its peak of 27 percent foreign born in 1870" [2] and a proportion of this immigrants were Cubans.
Starting as early as 1848 Cuban Immigrants came to the U.S. to escape the changing social and political landscape of their home island. The Spanish Empire, which laid claim to Cuba in 1492, began imposing new policies on the Cuban government that prevented Cubans from taking any positions in government. Spain's goal was to reassert their dominance over Cuba through political pressure and the imprisonment of any Cubans who would rebel against them. Following this string of stringent ordinances war broke out for Cuban independence in 1868 with the beginning of the Ten Years' War.
During the late 19th century many Cubans had left their home to find better opportunities for them and support their families through finding work in the U.S.. A large portion of these Cubans found work in the Cigar industry all along the east coast of the United States. Philadelphia was one of the primary cities alongside the east coast that Cuban migrants would move to due to the large factories that offered many employment opportunities.
Companies like the Bayuk Brothers/Co, [3] now known today as Phillies (cigar), was the largest manufacturer of cigars in Philadelphia and as a result brought on many migrant workers under their employment. In the 1880s most employees at cigar factories like Bayuk were middle class Cubans who had little experience in actual cigar manufacturing to begin with rather than refugees that arrived to the U.S. with very little. Some of these workers would actually go one to use their acquired skills and knowledge to open their own cigar stores later in their career. [4]
"The history of the cigar-making Bayuk brothers begins in 1896 when Sam, Max and Meyer Bayuk pooled $325 and opened their first factory in a rented Philadelphia attic, joining 900 or so other Philadelphia cigar makers. Their first cigar brand, PRINCESS BONNIE, sold well enough they were able to opened a second factory in Lancaster county, PA. In 1910, they introduced PHILADELPHIA HAND MADE PERFECTO, which the smoking public quickly adopted, shortening the name to “Phillies.” In 1912, the Bayuk Bros. Cigar Co. moved to larger headquarters in Philadelphia while operating small factories in Allentown, Steelton and Bethlehem in PA, Newark and Perth Amboy in NJ as well as one in Binghamton, NY. [5]
An economic shift occurred during the 1890s that resulted in the immigration of poorer laborers rather than the previously moderately well of middle class of Cubans that came before. This was primarily a result of the Cuban War of Independence. This caused many of the unskilled workers who arrived on the shores of the U.S. to become factory workers in larger scale operations. [4] Another industry that Cubans worked in predominately was the steam engine and locomotive industry. Baldwin Locomotive Works one of the major forces in the industry employed many Cubans as well as other groups of Latinos. [6]
A majority of Spanish speaking individuals were drawn to Southwark, Philadelphia as other minority groups had made this area of the city their home. The large congregation of Cuban and Hispanic immigrants led to the development of two organizations of note.
The first being the Spanish American Fraternal Benevolent Association in 1908, also known as La Fraternal, "which was the city's first Spanish speaking mutual aid society". [7] The second was the first Spanish speaking Catholic mission in Philadelphia known as Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal [7] or La Milagrosa which was established by Vincentian priests from Barcelona. As the Spanish who held Cuban for centuries was Catholic so was a majority of their colonies including Cuba and the establishment of a Hispanic church was of great significance to the Cuban immigrants in the U.S. The church was purchased by Vincentian priests in 1912 with the assistance from Katharine Drexel, "the founder of an order of nuns called the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored People", [8] and was opened with the intent of giving accessibility to Spanish speakers. Drexel, a nun of the Church, also made two conditions that the church must follow in order to receive her financial support which were "services could not be refused to Spanish-speaking Indians or colored people" [8]
As many Cubans were employed by cigar companies at the same time than many unions were developed naturally unions that focus on the working rights of Spanish speaking people would be created. In 1877 the first Spanish speaking union was established in Philadelphia by cigar makers. [7]
As Cuba moved for independence from the Spanish Empire in 1895 they would receive support from the United States. Many migrant Cubans would join the Cuba Libre movement in the early 1890s and primarily consisted of cigar workers throughout Philadelphia and the rest of the east coast.
Philadelphia was also the third largest supporter of the Cuban independence movement behind Tampa and New York until 1898. In the aftermath of the Spanish–American War the Cuban Revolutionary Party was disbanded and many of its members remained in Philadelphia and continued to lead other Spanish speakers in many social movements in the following years. [9]
Throughout the mid to late 19th century many Spanish speaking papers were released that proclaimed a strong support for the Cuban independence movement. These included El Eco de Cuba (1850's), El Cubano (1850's), Le Voce de America (1860's) and many others along the East coast. [4]
While this particular field of immigration history is relatively underdeveloped compared to the following mass migration from Cuba in the 1960s there is still research being done to expand this point in America's history.
Chinatowns in Latin America developed with the rise of Chinese immigration in the 19th century to various countries in Latin America as contract laborers in agricultural and fishing industries. Most came from Guangdong Province. Since the 1970s, the new arrivals have typically hailed from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. Latin American Chinatowns may include the descendants of original migrants — often of mixed Chinese and Latino parentage — and more recent immigrants from East Asia. Most Asian Latin Americans are of Cantonese and Hakka origin. Estimates widely vary on the number of Chinese descendants in Latin America but it is at least 1.4 million and likely much greater than this.
Chinese Cubans are Cubans of full or mixed Chinese ancestry who were born in or have immigrated to Cuba. They are part of the ethnic Chinese diaspora.
Cuban Americans are Americans who immigrated from or are descended from immigrants from Cuba, regardless of racial or ethnic origin. As of 2022, Cuban Americans were the fourth largest Hispanic and Latino American group in the United States after Mexican Americans, Stateside Puerto Ricans and Salvadoran Americans.
The wet feet, dry feet policy or wet foot, dry foot policy was the name given to a former interpretation of the 1995 revision of the application of the Cuban Adjustment Act of 1966 that essentially says that anyone who emigrated from Cuba and entered the United States would be allowed to pursue residency a year later. Prior to 1995, the U.S. government allowed all Cubans who reached U.S. territorial waters to remain in the U.S. After talks with the Cuban government, the Clinton administration came to an agreement with Cuba that it would stop admitting people intercepted in U.S. waters.

She is a professor of history and the Coordinator of Latin American, Latino and Caribbean Studies at Salem State University in Massachusetts. She previously taught at Bates College in Maine and was a research associate at Harvard University, where she specialized in Caribbean and Latin American history.
Isleños are the descendants of Canarian settlers and immigrants to present-day Louisiana, Puerto Rico, Texas, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and other parts of the Americas. In these places, the name isleño was applied to the Canary Islanders to distinguish them from Spanish mainlanders known as "peninsulars". Formerly used for the general category of people, it now refers to the specific cultural identity of Canary Islanders or their descendants throughout Latin America and in Louisiana, where they are still called isleños. Another name for Canary Islander in English is "Canarian." In Spanish, an alternative is canario or isleño canario.
Puerto Ricans have both immigrated and migrated to New York City. The first group of Puerto Ricans immigrated to New York City in the mid-19th century when Puerto Rico was a Spanish colony and its people Spanish subjects. The following wave of Puerto Ricans to move to New York City did so after the Spanish–American War in 1898. Puerto Ricans were no longer Spanish subjects and citizens of Spain, they were now Puerto Rican citizens of an American possession and needed passports to travel to the Contiguous United States.
Immigration to Mexico has been important in shaping the country's demographics. Since the early 16th century, with the arrival of the Spanish, Mexico has received immigrants from Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Asia. Today, millions of their descendants still live in Mexico and can be found working in different professions and industries.
Ybor City is a historic neighborhood that includes the Ybor City Historic District in Tampa, Florida. It is located just northeast of downtown Tampa and north of Port Tampa Bay. The neighborhood has distinct architectural, culinary, cultural, and historical legacy that reflects its multi-ethnic composition. It was unique in the American South as a prosperous manufacturing community built and populated almost entirely by immigrants.
Cuban immigration has greatly affected Miami-Dade County since 1959, creating what is known as "Cuban Miami." However, Miami reflects global trends as well, such as the growing trends of multiculturalism and multiracialism; this reflects the way in which international politics shape local communities.
Xarnego in Catalan or charnego in Spanish is a pejorative or descriptive term used primarily in the 1950s–70s in Catalonia (Spain) to refer to economic migrants from other regions of Spain. In its modern usage, it refers to Catalans with recent heritage from Spanish-speaking parts of Spain. The word is used solely in the context of internal migration.
Emigration from Mexico is the movement of people from Mexico to other countries. The top destination by far is the United States, by a factor of over 150 to 1 compared to the second most popular destination, Canada.
Spanish immigration to Cuba began in 1492, when the Spanish first landed on the island, and continues to the present day. The first sighting of a Spanish boat approaching the island was on 27 October 1492, probably at Bariay on the eastern point of the island. Columbus, on his first voyage to the Americas, sailed south from what is now The Bahamas to explore the northeast coast of Cuba and the northern coast of Hispaniola. Columbus came to the island believing it to be a peninsula of the Asian mainland.
The Spanish diaspora consists of Spanish people and their descendants who emigrated from Spain. In the Americas, the term may refer to those of Spanish nationality living there; "Hispanic" is usually a more appropriate term to describe the general Spanish-speaking populations of the Americas together with those in Spain. The diaspora is concentrated in places that were part of the Spanish Empire. Countries with sizeable populations are Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, and, to a lesser extent, Brazil, Belize, Haiti, United States, Canada, the Philippines and the rest of Europe.
The Great European Immigration Wave to Argentina was a major source of economic growth and social change for Argentina. Beginning in the late 19th century, the wave consisted largely of Italian and Spanish immigrants. There were also many other nationalities and ethnic groups that came, including Syrian-Lebanese, Germans, Ukrainians, Poles, Jews and others. The rapid influx of European migrants led to immense population growth in Argentina, and the migrants were incredibly influential in the politics of the nation by introducing political concepts like labor unions and socialism into the country's political zeitgeist. The remnants of the Immigration Wave of migrants are still visible in Argentina today, not only as a result of their influence on the country's economic and political history, but as cultural cornerstones in both urban and rural communities alike. Shifting labor markets and decreased reliance on European economics after the outbreak of World War I had a huge effect on European Migration to Argentina. These factors all lead to the end of the Great European Immigration Wave and began an era of Latin American politics primarily focused on domestic growth rather than the outsourcing of international labor.
The Ybor cigar makers' strike of 1931 took place in Ybor City, Tampa, Florida, starting on November 26 and ended in December. Some strikers were jailed, "Lectors" were banned and there was a lockout. Following legal intervention, some workers returned to work at previous wage levels but others were not re-employed. Lectors had by tradition been elected by the workers and, as well as reading aloud newspaper articles, often from left-wing radical publications, they recited and acted more generally, including from classic works – effectively they provided a form of education for illiterate workers. The most significant effect of the strike in the longer term was that the lector culture was brought to an end.
At the 2011 census, the number of immigrants in Costa Rica totaled about 390,000 individuals, or about 9% of the country's population. Following a considerable drop from 1950 through 1980, immigration to Costa Rica has increased in recent decades.
Cuban immigration to the United States, for the most part, occurred in two periods: the first series of immigration of wealthy Cuban Americans to the United States resulted from Cubans establishing cigar factories in Tampa and from attempts to overthrow Spanish colonial rule by the movement led by José Martí, the second to escape from Communist rule under Fidel Castro following the Cuban Revolution. Massive Cuban migration to Miami during the second series led to major demographic and cultural changes in Miami. There was also economic emigration, particularly during the Great Depression in the 1930s. As of 2019, there were 1,359,990 Cubans in the United States.
Maya Americans are Americans of Indigenous Maya descent. Most Maya Americans originate from western Guatemala and Chiapas.
Emigration from Malta or the Maltese diaspora consists of Maltese people and their lineal descendants who emigrated from Malta. It was an important demographic phenomenon throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, leading to the creation of large diaspora’s concentrated in English-speaking countries such as Australia, Canada, United Kingdom and the United States.
