Culture Summit Abu Dhabi is a summit that convenes leaders from the worlds of the arts, media, public policy, and technology.

Contents

It is organized and produced by The Rothkopf Group (TRG) and The Canales Project Ventures (TCPV), along with Abu Dhabi Department of Culture & Tourism. [1]

Culture Summit 2018 took place at Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi, UAE throughout April 8-12, 2018, and was focused on the theme of “Unexpected Collaborations.” [2] [3] The event featured a series of curated performances, exhibits, and interventions by renowned artists and musicians across the world. The performances came from everywhere from European Union Youth Orchestra to Abu Dhabi’s Bait Al Oud musical academy, with new collaborations transcending disciplinary and cultural boundaries.

Organization

The Summit was planned with an intention of being the "Davos of culture" [4] and a place "to highlight the power of collective imagination as a force for good." [5]

Participants

The 2017 inaugural event was attended by 450 delegates from 80 countries, including internationally acclaimed visual artist Idris Khan, Academy Award-winning composer and conductor Tan Dun, former United States Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, MacArthur Fellow and award-winning choreographer Liz Lerman, His Excellency Dr. Anwar Gargash, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and His Excellency Dr. Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, UAE Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. [6] [7] It was however, criticized for excluding a lot of local Emirati artists. [8] CultureSummit 2017 hosted representatives from the following organizations:

The Louvre Abu Dhabi is an art museum located on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It runs under an agreement between the UAE and France, signed in March 2007, that allows it to use the Louvre's name until 2037, and has been described by the Louvre as "France's largest cultural project abroad." It is approximately 24,000 square metres (260,000 sq ft) in size, with 8,000 square metres (86,000 sq ft) of galleries, making it the largest art museum in the Arabian peninsula. Artworks from around the world are showcased at the museum, with stated intent to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western art.

The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is a planned art museum, to be located in Saadiyat Island cultural district in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Upon completion, it is planned to be the largest of the Guggenheim museums. Architect Frank Gehry designed the building. After announcing the museum project in 2006, work on the site began in 2011 but was soon suspended. A series of construction delays followed; the museum is expected to be completed in 2025.

Zayed National Museum is a planned museum, to be located in Abu Dhabi, the UAE. It is designed as a memorial to the late Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father and first president of the UAE. The museum is planned to be the centrepiece of the Saadiyat Island Cultural District, and will showcase the history, culture, and economic transformation of the Emirates.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hassan Sharif</span>

Hassan Sharif was an Emirati artist and prolific writer. He lived and worked in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He is widely regarded as a central figure in contemporary and conceptual art in the region, often known as the father of conceptual art in the Gulf. He founded Al Marijah Art Atelier, and through his extensive work and writings, he inspired the next generation of artists in the United Arab Emirates. His work is represented in major public collections, such as the Guggenheim New York, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Centre Pompidou, Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, and Sharjah Art Foundation.

Cultural policy in Abu Dhabi, a city within the United Arab Emirates, refers to any initiative undertaken by the Emirate government aimed at achieving goals to contribute to or shape culture. Abu Dhabi's government aims to develop a cultural infrastructure that will allow it to establish itself as a reference point for culture on three levels:

Anwar Mohammed Gargash is an Emirati politician who served as the minister of state for foreign affairs between February 2008 and February 2021. Since February 2021, he has been serving as a senior diplomatic advisor to the United Arab Emirates president.

Her Excellency Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi is an Emirati politician and businesswoman currently serving as Minister of State at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She previously served as Minister of Culture and Youth from 2020-2023 for the United Arab Emirates. She has held the position since October 2017. Previously she was the Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs from February 2016 to October 2017. She has also been the chairperson of the twofour54 since 2012 and of Abu Dhabi Media since 2017.

The Global Cultural Districts Network (GCDN) is a federation of global centers of arts and culture. Its members represent cities, cultural districts, and cultural institutions from around the world, including Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, China, and Singapore.[14]

Alexandra Munroe is an American curator, Asia scholar, and author focusing on art, culture, and institutional global strategy. She has produced over 40 exhibitions and published pioneering scholarship on modern and contemporary Asian art. She organized the first major North American retrospectives of artists Yayoi Kusama (1989), Daido Moriyama (1999), Yoko Ono (2000), Mu Xin (2001), Cai Guo-Qiang (2008), and Lee Ufan (2011), among others, and has brought such historic avant-garde movements as Gutai, Mono-ha, and Chinese conceptual art, as well as Japanese otaku culture, to international attention. Her project Japanese Art after 1945: Scream Against the Sky (1994) is recognized for initiating the field of postwar Japanese art history in North America. Recently, Munroe was lead curator of the Guggenheim’s exhibition, Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World, which the New York Times named as one of 2017’s top ten exhibitions and ARTnews named as one of the decade’s top 25 most influential shows. Credited for the far-reaching impact of her exhibitions and scholarship bolstering knowledge of postwar Japanese art history in America and Japan, she received the 2017 Japan Foundation Award and the 2018 Commissioner for Cultural Affairs Award, both bestowed by the government of Japan.

Ebtisam Abdulaziz is a contemporary Emirati artist and writer born and raised in Sharjah, UAE. She works with geometry and mathematics to address issues of belonging and identity through installations, performance art and other media.

Carla Dirlikov Canales is an American mezzo-soprano singer, educator, cultural diplomat, arts advocate, author, and non-profit entrepreneur.

Al Anood Al Obeidli is currently a full time collage artist. She studied Visual Artist in visual arts from Abu Dhabi, UAE. The point of departure for all her work is collage.

Ihab Darwish is an Emirati composer, Universal Music Artist, and Recording Academy voting member. Darwish has been playing music since the age of ten and grew up in a family that supported his passion for music and composing. He received his Bachelors in Advertising and Art Design from the Lebanese American University in Beirut.Years after graduation, Darwish designed and created his own home recording studio equipped with state of the art instruments and technology. He has experimented with music for years, working mainly in the genre of classical music.

Abdulla bin Mohamed Al Hamed was the Chairman of the Department of Health in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and a member of Abu Dhabi Executive Council

Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan is crown prince of Abu Dhabi. He was appointed to the role on 29 March 2023. He is the eldest son of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates.
