The Culture and Media Institute (CMI) is an American former non-profit organization focusing on promoting what it considers to be "traditional values" in American culture and beliefs and "fair treatment" of conservatives in news and entertainment media. It was founded in October 2006 as a division of the Media Research Center, a group that monitors perceived liberal news media bias. [1] [ better source needed ]

The Institute promotes its mission through editorials and research reports. Among its viewpoints include opposition to the Fairness Doctrine [2] and same-sex marriage. [3] In March 2007, the CMI published a "National Cultural Values Survey" and concluded from its results that most Americans perceived a decline in moral values. [4] One study released by the organization in June 2007 claimed that television viewing time correlated directly with one's liberal attitude, even possibly degrading to moral attitudes. [5]

The CBS crime drama Cold Case has been twice criticized by the CMI for alleged anti-Christian prejudice in two episodes. [6] In May 2008, CMI released another report, one that claimed a moral decline in "Dear Abby" columns. [7] [8] The CMI website remained online through the end of 2010, [9] before it was folded in the Media Research Center website in 2011. [10] In November 2014, the MRC renamed the institute MRC Culture. [11]

Fair use is a doctrine in United States law that permits limited use of copyrighted material without having to first acquire permission from the copyright holder. The Independent Media Center is an open publishing network of activist journalist collectives that report on political and social issues. Beginnings were made in London and Sydney during the 1999 Carnival Against Capital then the first Indymedia Media Center was founded to report on the protests against the World Trade Organisational Ministerial Conference in Seattle. Indymedia became closely associated with the global justice movement, which criticized neo-liberalism and its associated institutions.

Leo Brent Bozell III is an American conservative writer and activist who founded the Media Research Center, Parents Television Council, and CNSNews.com. Bozell served as president of the Parents Television Council from 1995 to 2006. In addition, Bozell serves on the board for the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights and has served on the board of directors in the American Conservative Union. Bozell's column is also nationally syndicated by Creator's Syndicate where his work appears in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Washington Times, New York Post, Los Angeles Times, and National Review.

The fairness doctrine of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), introduced in 1949, was a policy that required the holders of broadcast licenses both to present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was honest, equitable and balanced. In 1987, the FCC abolished the fairness doctrine, prompting some to urge its reintroduction through either Commission policy or congressional legislation. However later the FCC removed the rule that implemented the policy from the Federal Register in August 2011.

Antonia Darder is a Puerto Rican and American scholar, artist, poet and activist. She holds the Leavey Presidential Endowed Chair in Ethics and Moral Leadership in the School of Education at Loyola Marymount University. She also is Professor Emerita of Educational Policy, Organization, and Leadership at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Professor Emerita of Performance Studies at New York University, she is best known for her interdisciplinary contributions to Jewish studies and to the theory and history of museums, tourism, and heritage. She is currently Chief Curator of the Core Exhibition and Advisor to the Director at POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw.
