Currents is an American metalcore band formed in Newtown, Connecticut in 2011 by former drummer Jeff Brown. [1] After numerous line-up changes, they consist of singer Brian Wille, guitarists Ryan Castaldi and Chris Wiseman, bassist and backing vocalist Christian Pulgarin, and drummer Matt Young. Since 2018, no original members remain with the band.

History

In January 2013, the debut EP Victimized was released independently with five tracks on it. Two years later, on January 23, 2015, they released the EP Life // Lost, in which Ricky Armellino from This or the Apocalypse appears as a guest musician, which was also released independently.

At the beginning of March 2017, the band was signed by the US independent label SharpTone Records. [2] On June 16 of the same year, the band's debut album, The Place I Feel Safest, was released via SharpTone Records. [3] On May 4, 2018 the band released the instrumental version of the album. [4] On December 14, 2018, Currents released their EP entitled I Let the Devil In through SharpTone Records; also included in the EP was the instrumental version of the EP. [5]

On June 5, 2020, Currents released their second album, The Way it Ends through SharpTone Records. [6] The album received positive reviews from critics. Kris Pugh of Distorted Sound Magazine applauded the band, saying: "At a time where there seems to be a new emerging modern metalcore band around every corner, CURRENTS have just gone a long way to making a lot of them feel somewhat irrelevant." [7] On April 20, 2021, the band released the instrumental edition of the album. [8]

On August 31, 2022, Currents released a new single "The Death We Seek". [9] Through the late Summer of 2022, the band joined Miss May I on a North American tour with Kingdom of Giants and LANDMVRKS. [10] On November 25, 2022, the band released another new single "Vengeance". [11] On February 1, 2023, Currents released the third single "Remember Me", along with the announcement of their third album "The Death We Seek", to be released on May 5, 2023 via SharpTone Records. [12] On March 29, the band released the album's fourth single "So Alone". [13] Simultaneous with the album's release, the band released a new music video for "Unfamiliar". [14]

Music

Currents has been categorized as metalcore and progressive metal, with influences of djent. According to Morten Wenzek of Metal Hammer Germany, the band "copied European djent well", referring to progenitors like Novelists and Loathe. [15] Currents incorporate heavy riffs, breakdowns, djent guitars, and melodic rhythms, and singer Brian Wille alternates between clear and screaming vocals. [16] [17]

Despite the name, the band is not named after the Cannibal Corpse song of the same name.

Whitechapel is an American deathcore band from Knoxville, Tennessee. The band is named after the Whitechapel district in East London, England, where Jack the Ripper committed a series of murders. The group comprises vocalist Phil Bozeman, lead guitarist Ben Savage, rhythm guitarist Alex Wade, bassist Gabe Crisp and third guitarist Zach Householder. Founded in 2006 by Bozeman and Savage, the band has released eight studio albums and fourteen music videos, and are currently signed to Metal Blade Records. Whitechapel's 2010 album A New Era of Corruption, sold around 10,600 copies in the United States in its first week of release and debuted at position No. 43 on the Billboard 200 chart. The band's self-titled fourth album was released in 2012 and debuted at No. 47 on the Billboard 200, selling roughly 9,200 copies in its first week. In 2014 the band released their fifth full-length album, Our Endless War to generally positive reviews. The album sold roughly 16,000 copies in its first week and debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200. They released their sixth full-length album Mark of the Blade in 2016 to greater critical acclaim, selling roughly 8,000 copies in the first week of its release. In 2019, Whitechapel released their seventh album, The Valley, which debuted at No. 143 on the Billboard 200 also to critical acclaim. Their newest album, Kin, was released on October 29, 2021.

The Amity Affliction is an Australian post-hardcore band from Gympie, Queensland, formed in 2003. The band's current line-up consists of Ahren Stringer, Joel Birch, Dan Brown (guitar) and Joe Longobardi (drums). The Amity Affliction has released eight studio albums including Severed Ties (2008), Youngbloods (2010), Chasing Ghosts (2012), Let the Ocean Take Me (2014), This Could Be Heartbreak (2016), Misery (2018) and Everyone Loves You... Once You Leave Them (2020). They are known for their highly personal songs, often dealing with depression, anxiety, death, substance abuse, and suicide, many lyrics stemming from vocalist Joel Birch's past struggles. The Amity Affliction released their latest album, Not Without My Ghosts, on 12 May 2023.

Miss May I is an American metalcore band from Troy, Ohio. Formed in 2007, they signed to Rise Records in 2008 and released their debut album, Apologies Are for the Weak through the label while the members were still attending high school. The album reached 76 on the Billboard 200, No. 29 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers, and No. 66 on Top Independent Albums. The band has also had some of their material featured in big name productions; the song "Forgive and Forget" is featured on the Saw VI Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, and their song "Apologies Are for the Weak" is included in the video game Saints Row: The Third.

Twelve Foot Ninja are an Australian heavy metal band from Melbourne, Victoria. They released their debut album Silent Machine in 2012. The band consists of Kin (vocals), Russ (drums), Stevic, and Rohan. They won Best New Talent at the 2014 Revolver Golden Gods Awards as well as two listener-voted awards from SiriusXM's Liquid Metal the year before. The band broke a world record for the most amount crowdfunded for a music video. Their first headline tour of Europe in April 2017 sold out five of the seven UK shows. In mid 2022, the band announced an "indefinite hiatus". Although, they are working on an acoustic album of Twelve Foot Ninja material. The release date is yet to be announced.

The label's roster includes an amalgamation of metalcore and rock bands: Don Broco, Loathe, Miss May I, We Came as Romans, Of Mice & Men, Holding Absence, Story of the Year, August Burns Red, Polaris, Currents, Crystal Lake, Emmure, and Alt.

Landon Khale Tewers is an American musician and producer born in Findlay, Ohio. He is a former band member of Before Their Eyes, where he was the rhythm guitarist and unclean vocalist. He is best known for being founder and the lead vocalist in the rock band The Plot in You and for his self-titled solo project.
