The Curtis and Jones Company Shoe Factory was a major shoe manufacturer located in Reading, Pennsylvania that operated from 1902 to 1974. [1]
The Curtis and Jones Company was founded by Frederick W. Curtis and Frederick S. Jones sometime in the late 1870s or early 1880s and specialized in the manufacture of shoes for infants and children.
The company originally occupied a building on Penn Square in the center of downtown Reading and had moved location three times prior to moving into the Shoe Factory building upon the incorporation of the company. At its peak, the Curtis and Jones Company had over 700 employees and produced 10,000 shoes a day, mainly for infants, children, and women. [2]
After the Curtis and Jones Company ceased operations in the 1974, [1] the building was used as part of the Reading Outlet Center until it fell into disuse. [3]
The building was renovated in the 2016 by Shuman Development Group and is now used to house the Big Mill Apartments, which contains 69 apartments and approximately 42,000 square feet of commercial space. [4]
The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 28, 2014. [5]

The Augusta Canal is a historic canal located in Augusta, Georgia, United States. The canal is fed by the Savannah River and passes through three levels in suburban and urban Augusta before the water returns to the river at various locations. The Bates Mill is a textile factory company founded in 1850 and located at 35 Canal Street in Lewiston, Maine. The mill served as Maine's largest employer through the 1860s, and early profits from the mill provided much of the initial capital for nearby Bates College. Currently, the mill buildings are home to several new businesses, apartments, and a small museum.

The Old Jail, also known as the Old Wilkes County Jail, located at 15 Court Street in Washington, Georgia was built in 1891. It was built by the McDonald Brothers Company of Louisville. The Old Jail has been on the list of National Register of Historic Places since June 5, 1974. It is a contributing member to the Washington Commercial Historic District, which was included on the National Register of Historic places on March 6, 1986.
The Queensbury Mill is a historic mill building at 1 Market Street in Somersworth, New Hampshire. Built in 1884, it is unusual for the period for its wood-frame construction, and for its financing, executed by local businessmen to attract shoe manufacturers to the city. The mill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The building has been converted into apartments.
Brown Shoe Company's Homes-Take Factory, also known as the International Hat Company Warehouse, is a historic building location at 1201 Russell Boulevard in the Soulard neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. Built in 1904, by renowned architect Albert B. Groves, the building was originally a factory for the Brown Shoe Company, based in St. Louis. In 1954, the factory was subsequently converted into a warehouse by the International Hat Company. The site has been recognized as a testament to Grove's architectural expertise in the principles of factory design, namely technical advances in layout planning, operational efficiency, and employee safety. Additionally, the factory epitomizes the early 20th century cultural transformation and socio-industrial development of St. Louis into a manufacturing powerhouse. In particular, the Brown Shoe Company is recognized as a principal player in challenging the 19th century dominance of the New England shoe industry. This significantly contributed to the early 20th century sobriquet of St. Louis as the city of "shoes, booze, and blues." The Brown Shoe Company's Homes-Take factory is considered to be among the pioneering industrial facilities of this historic transformation.
The M.C. Kiser Company Building is a historic building in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Located in the South Downtown neighborhood, it was built in 1923 as a shoe factory, converted to apartments in 2017, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2019.
The Berks County Trust Company is a historic building in downtown Reading, Pennsylvania. Originally constructed in 1909, the six-story building was home to a bank known as the Berks County Trust Company and was the second largest bank branch in Berks County. The building still contains the original 1909 bank vault from the York Safe and Lock Company used by the building's eponymous bank. The building had additions built onto it in 1923, 1964 and 1984.
Fort Andross, also known as Fort George and Cabot Mill, was initially established as a trading post and later converted into a historic garrison by the colonial British Empire as a defensive measure against the Wabanaki Native Americans who were allied with France during King William's War (1688–1697). It was situated next to Brunswick Falls, on the Androscoggin River in Brunswick, Maine. During the war, the fortification was destroyed, rebuilt, and renamed Fort George in 1715. Once the Native American wars came to an end, the fort was abandoned.
