D. C. Gowri Shankar is an Indian politician and former Member of the Legislative Assembly (India) in Karnataka. He was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Madhugiri in the 2008 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election as a member of the Janata Dal (Secular). [1]

After 2008 elections he contested as a JDS candidate for Tumkur Rural Assembly constituency and lost by a small margin of 1500 votes and then again contested in 2018 elections and won in a margin of 5640 votes and became the MLA for second time and entered the assembly. Under the coalition government of JDS and Congress he chaired the MSIL foundation for 6 months.

In March 2023, Gowri Shankar was disqualified by the Karnataka High Court as an MLA for the Tumkur Rural assembly constituency. Justice S. Sunil Dutt Yadav ruled that Gowri Shankar had used unauthorized means in campaigning for his election in 2018. [2]

After his prime ministerial tenure, he was elected to the 12th (1998), 14th (2004), 15th, and 16th Lok Sabha, as Member of Parliament for the Hassan Lok Sabha constituency. He lost Lok Sabha elections in 2019 from Tumkuru but has been elected to Rajya Sabha since.

The 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election was held on 12 May 2018 in 222 constituencies to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. The election was postponed in Jayanagar and Rajarajeshwari Nagar, following the death of the MLA B. N. Vijaya Kumar and a voter fraud scandal respectively till 28 May. The election saw a voter turnout of 72.13 per cent, the highest in Karnataka since 1952 assembly polls. The counting of votes took place on 15 May 2018.

Since 2017, he represents the Paniyara in Maharajganj district of Uttar Pradesh and is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
