Dr. D. P. Singh (nee Dr. Devinder Pal Singh), born 1956, is an Indo-Canadian scientist, [1] [2] [3] educationist, [4] [5] author [6] [7] science fiction writer, [8] Sikh theologian, [9] [10] [11] [12] and TV host. [13] As a widely travelled person, mostly for his academic research, and promotion of science [14] [15] in developing countries, he has published about 100 research papers in Acoustics, Polymer Physics, Condensed Matter Physics and Material Science. Besides, he has published over 1000 general articles on the topics related to Science, Environment and Religion. [16]

Due to his outstanding contributions for the cultivation of scientific temper [17] [18] and environmental awareness [19] among people, the Peace on Earth Organization, Canada, in 2010, honored him with the "Life Time Achievement Award". Though he writes in English and Punjabi, his works have also been translated into Hindi, Shahmukhi, and Marathi languages.

Early life

Born in 1956, at Hoshiarpur, Punjab, India, Devinder received M.Sc. (Physics) degree from Panjab University, Chandigarh, in 1978. Started his professional career at SGGS Khalsa College, Chandigarh, India. In 1986, received Ph.D. degree from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Served several Higher Education institutions, as part of the Punjab Education Services, Govt. of Punjab, during 1980-2008. After joining Shivalik College, Nangal in 1980, he excelled in popular science communication in Punjabi and English languages, but later on focussed on Science fiction, [20] environmental [21] [22] and theological writings. Career

After a 30 years long educational career, as Associate Professor in Physics, at Punjab Education Services, Govt. of Punjab, India, Dr. Singh moved to Canada in 2008. Herein, he founded [5] an educational Center, dedicated to helping University/College/Senior Secondary students to achieve their academic dreams in the fields of Physical Sciences, and Humanities. Since 2013, he has served as Director, [23] and Educational Consultant to several academic institutions [24] [25] in GTA, Canada. During 2014-2020, he has worked as Associate Dean at International University of California, [26] USA and is currently working as Honorary Director, Center for Understanding Sikhism, [27] Mississauga, ON, Canada.

Works

Physics research

With about 100 research papers in Physics and allied fields to his credit [1] Dr. Singh has guided one dozen research students and supervised two M. Phil. theses. Besides, he established Acoustics Research Center, Mississauga, Canada to actively pursue his research interests [28] in Acoustics. Having participated in about 50 conferences/ seminars within Canada and abroad, he is a member of several international research societies. [29] In addition, he is the referee panel member of several reputed research journals of Canada, USA, Nigeria, and India.

Scientific literature

Besides publishing 20 books and about 1000 general articles on various aspects of science and technology, [30] [31] [32] he has also translated 4 books from English to Punjabi.

Science fiction writings

In the genre of science fiction, Dr. Singh has authored/published [8] [33] [34] [35] two books for general readers, four books for children and about 45 stories, to date, in various newspapers and magazines of Canada, USA, India, and Pakistan in Punjabi, Hindi, and English.

Sikh Theology

As Director, Center for Understanding Sikhism, [36] Mississauga Canada, he played a vital role in the promotion of teaching and research in Sikh Theology [37] [38] in India and Canada. With three books, two booklets, and about 200 articles on Sikh theology to his credit, he has delivered about one dozen invited talks on ‘Sikh Religion and Philosophy,’ at various educational institutions within India and Canada. Five of his articles have been included in different books edited by eminent Sikh scholars. He has reviewed [39] thirteen books authored by eminent Sikh writers.

Media

Over 70 of his talks on Sikhism, science, and social topics have been telecast by Jhanjer TV, Sanjha Punjab TV, Channel Punjabi Toronto Dateline TV, Vision TV, and Hello Canada TV, Canada. He has also participated in the science programs of DD Punjabi, Doordarshan Jalandhar, Vision Punjab TV, Kharar, Punjab and Global Punjab TV, Chandigarh, India. Many of these talks are also available on Youtube. [40] [41] About 50 of his radio programs [42] on science and religion have been broadcast by Ajj Di Awaz Radio, Desh Punjab Radio, Parvasi Radio, Punjabi Dunia, AVR Media Productions, Canada and All India Radio, Jalandhar, India.

Sardar Gurbachan Singh was a Sikh scholar, professor, and author. He was born in Moonak, Sangrur district. He was a lecturer at the Sikh National College at Lahore. At the Banaras Hindu University he held the Guru Nanak Chair of Sikh Studies. He received the Padma Bhushan in 1985. He received in 1985 the National fellowship by the Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi.

Followers of Sikhism do not have a preference for meat or vegetarian consumption. There are two views on initiated or "Amritdhari Sikhs" and meat consumption. "Amritdhari" Sikhs can eat meat. "Amritdharis" that belong to some Sikh sects are vehemently against the consumption of meat and eggs.

She retired as Professor of Punjabi, and Dean, from Punjabi University, Patiala. She is widely credited as a tour-de-force in the creation of the contemporary literature in the Punjabi language.

Roopinder Singh is an Indian journalist and author. He retired as Senior Associate Editor with the English daily newspaper, The Tribune, published from Chandigarh, India. in 2020.His specialization is Sikh history and culture, information technology, and education. He is the author of six major books in English, including a critically acclaimed volume on the founder of Sikh religion, Guru Nanak Dev, and a volume on Sikh heritage. He lives in Chandigarh, Punjab.

Santokh Singh Dhir was an Indian writer and poet who wrote in Punjabi. He was known for his stories Koee Ik Sawaar, Sanjhi Kandh and Saver Hon Tak. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for his story collection Pakhi (1991) in 1996 by the Government of India. He died on 8 February 2010.

Waryam Singh Sandhu is an Indian author of short stories. In 2000, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for his short story collection Chauthi koot. Although he writes in Punjabi, his works have been translated into Hindi, Bengali, Urdu and English.

Jaswant Singh Rahi was a Punjabi poet, writer, communist and freedom fighter. He was born in and lived his whole life in Dera Baba Nanak town of Gurdaspur district of Punjab, India. Columnist Joginder Singh Bedi stated, "Born in the holy town of Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district, the Sahit Shiromani Poet Jaswant Singh Rahi's contribution to Punjabi world of letters is no less than that of Dhani Ram Chatrik, Prof Mohan Singh (poet) and Prof Puran Singh. Rahi is popularly known for his slogan Jai Mitarta."

Trilok Singh Chitarkar (1914-1990) was a versatile Indian painter. He has unique style of presenting himself through variety of themes - Sikh religion, history, culture, folk lore, love legends, portraits, social evils, nature, illustration of Gurbani, Shabads, visuals in Punjabi Encyclopedia and books. He was well versed with deep knowledge of Gurbani, history and religion. He knew many languages i.e. Gurmukhi, Punjabi, Hindi, English, Urdu, Persian, Assamese and Bengali. He translated articles from Bengali to Punjabi and published these in the book titled Bangla De Daab in 1974. The Artist was honoured in 1973 by the Chief Minister, Punjab,India Giani Zail Singh at a state level function organised at his residence, Chitralok, Patiala. Language department, Punjab published a book in Punjabi-Chitralok's Contribution to Art and released on the 70th birthday of the artist, 10 December 1984 at a special function organised in Central Library at Patiala for his contribution to Art.

Amardeep Singh is an Indian researcher, writer, photographer and documentary filmmaker based in Singapore. Currently, he and his wife, Vininder Kaur, are the managing directors of Lost Heritage Productions, a media production house started by them. He formerly worked in the financial sector as an executive. He won the Guru Nanak Interfaith Prize in 2022 for retracing the journey of Guru Nanak, the first Sikh Guru, in his docu-series Allegory: A Tapestry of Guru Nanak's Travels.
