Davanagere is a city in the centre of the southern Indian state of Karnataka. It is the seventh largest city in the state, and the administrative headquarters of eponymous Davangere district. Hitherto being a cotton hub and hence popularly known before as the Manchester of Karnataka, the commercial ventures of the city is now dominated by education and agro-processing industries. Davanagere became a separate district in 1997, when it was separated from the erstwhile undivided district of Chitradurga for administration conveniences. Davanagere is known for rich culinary traditions which encompass the diversity of entire Karnataka's dishes due to its geographical position in the state as its centre. Notable among them is its aromatic benne dose.
Devanahalli Venkataramanaiah Gundappa, popularly known as DVG, was an Indian writer, poet and philosopher in Kannada-language. He is one of the stalwarts of modern Kannada literature. His most notable work is the Mankuthimmana Kagga, which is similar to the wisdom poems of the late medieval poet Sarvajna.

Basavanagudi is a residential and commercial locality in the Indian city of Bangalore. Basavanagudi is one of the oldest localities of Bangalore evidenced by the fact that it is home to four inscriptions, three Kannada and one Tamil and also one of the poshest areas of Bangalore. Marula Muniyana Kagga is practically the extension of Mankuthimmana Kagga. These are the stray poems of Devanahalli Venkataramanaiah Gundappa, referred to as DVG, which have been collected together and published after his death. We can find in these poems the expression of fine thoughts of a person who had immense interest in the affairs of divinity. Written by an amateur person each poem contains ripened wisdom of a great scholar. Though the poet claims that Marula Muniya is the brother of Mankuthimma, one could realize before long that Muniya is none other than Mankuthimma himself. It is no wonder if DVG himself must have felt the development of this kind of writing.
