A dairy shop or dairy store, sometimes just called a "dairy", is an establishment that sells a range of products to the general public: primarily dairy products, such as milk, yoghurt, butter and cheese, as well as, typically, some other products, such as eggs. Formerly common in many countries,[ citation needed ] such shops have disappeared during the later half of the 20th century, when this market segment was taken over by supermarkets and convenience stores.
Some dairy stores, instead of disappearing, have in this period expanded the range of products sold, becoming convenience stores in the process.[ citation needed ] In New Zealand, such transformed dairy stores have retained the name "dairy"; see Dairy (New Zealand).
