Dale Launer (born May 19, 1952) is an American screenwriter, film director and producer, best known for his work in comedy films. His films include Ruthless People , Blind Date , Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and My Cousin Vinny .

Biography

Launer was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and brought up in the San Fernando valley. [1] He is the son of actor S. John Launer and is Jewish. [2] [3] He attended California State University, Northridge, [1] where, after changing his major to Film, [4] he recognized his desire for a job writing and directing films. His first successful screenplay was Ruthless People (1986).

In May 2007, his film Tom's Nu Heaven, [5] which he produced, wrote and directed, won Best Picture at the Monaco Film Festival.

Launer was friends with the family of murderer Elliot Rodger. At the behest of Rodger's father, Launer attempted to advise Rodger on how to be more confident with women. After Rodger's death, Launer wrote an article for the BBC about his experience. [6]

Ruthless People is a 1986 American black comedy film directed by David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker and written by Dale Launer. It stars Danny DeVito, Bette Midler, Judge Reinhold, Anita Morris, and Helen Slater, with Bill Pullman in a supporting role in his film debut. The film is the story of a couple who kidnap their ex-boss's wife to get revenge and extort money from him. They soon realize he does not want her back and was planning to kill her himself. Meanwhile, the boss's mistress plans a blackmail attempt on him, which also fails to go as planned.

Joanna Gleason is a Canadian-American actress and singer. She is a Tony Award–winning musical theatre actress and has also had a number of notable film and TV roles. She is known for originating the role of the Baker's Wife in Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods for which she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
