Dalton & Dubarri was an American rock band active in the 1970s, led by Gary Dalton and Kent Dubarri. They mainly played as support acts for artists such as The Beach Boys, Elvin Bishop, The Doobie Brothers, Loggins and Messina, Dave Mason, Boz Scaggs, and Rod Stewart. [1] The group incorporated various aspects of pop, rock, and soul into their music. Recording for Columbia, ABC, and Hilltak, they released four original albums during their career. In 1979, they had a hit with the disco single "I Can Dance All By Myself", which made the Billboard , Cash Box , and Record World charts.

History

Background and formation: 1960s–1974

Dalton & Dubarri was founded by Gary Dalton Stovall and Kent DuBarri Sprague, [2] who also went by the name Butch DuBarri. DuBarri was born and raised in Quincy, Illinois. [3]

During the 1960s, Kent Sprague was the drummer and leader of a Los Angeles-based band, Kent and the Candidates, who backed Brenton Wood. [4] [5] They also recorded several singles for the Double Shot label, [6] [7] including "Trouble", which was released in August 1967, at the same time as Brenton Wood published the song "Gimme Little Sign". [8] Dalton additionally played guitar and sang in the rock band Churchill Downs, in 1967 and 1968. [9]

In the early 1970s, Dalton and DuBarri were in a band called Boones Farm, which released an album in 1972. [10]

Dalton & Dubarri: 1974–1979

Introducing themselves to the music scene, the band's New York debut was at Madison Square Gardens [11] and they played their first Los Angeles show at the Troubadour. [12]

Dalton & Dubarri's first two albums were the self-titled Dalton & Dubarri (1973) [13] and Good Head (1974), both released on Columbia. [14] After failing to achieve a commercial breakthrough with either record, they were dropped by the label.[ citation needed ] They went on to publish Success and Failure for ABC in 1976. This was followed by Choice, released by Hilltak in 1979, which included the hit song "I Can Dance All By Myself". On May 5, 1979, it was a recommended soul song on Billboard's Top Single Picks. [15] [16] It made #79 on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart. [17] The track also entered the Record World Singles 101 to 150 Chart at #131 for the week of May 26, 1979, [18] making it to #123 on June 23. [19] It entered the Cash Box Top 100 chart at #94 for the week of June 2, 1979, [20] reaching #73 in its fourth week, on June 23. [21] They had another hit in 1979 with "'Til the Day I Started Lovin' You", which got to #76 on the Billboard R&B chart. [22] [23] This was followed by "Flying Free", also released on Hilltak. [24]

"Kiss You All Over" is a 1978 song performed by American group Exile, written by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn. It was included on the band's third album, Mixed Emotions (1978), and featured lead vocalist Jimmy Stokley and guitarist J.P. Pennington on vocals. On the American Top 40 broadcast of May 26, 1979, Casey Kasem reported that Chapman stated his source of inspiration for "Kiss You All Over" was "It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next to Me" by Barry White. The song was a number one single in the United States, but proved to be Exile's only big hit in the pop market.

Boones Farm were an early 1970s country rock band who were signed to the Columbia label. Releasing an album and two singles, they had some chart success with the song "If You Can't Be My Woman". Two of the group's members would later become the Dalton & Dubarri duo.

Kent Sprague aka Butch Dubarri is a singer, drummer and composer. During the 1960s, his band Kent & the Candidates backed Brenton Wood, playing on two of the singer's hits. Hilltak records was a Californian Independent record label that was formed in the late 1970s. Artists that produced hits for the label include 9th Creation, Patti Hendrix, Broadway, Dalton & Dubarri, and The Guess Who. The label started out as a subsidiary of Atlantic Records but terminated the relationship some time later.

"I (You) Can Dance All by My (Your) Self" or "I Can Dance All by Myself" was a hit for US duo Dalton & Dubarri in 1979. A disco song, it was released on the Hilltak label and later on the DJM label.

"'Til the Day I Started Lovin' You" was a hit for Dalton & Dubarri in 1979. It was the follow up to their hit, "I (You) Can Dance All By My (Your) Self".

"A Little Bit of Good (Cures a Whole Lot of Bad)" aka "A Little Bit of Good" was a hit on the Hot Soul Singles Chart for soul duo Sam & Dave in 1974.

"If You Can't Be My Woman" was a chart hit for country-rock band, Boones Farm, charting for two weeks in 1972. It has also been recorded by female artists as "If I Can't Be Your Woman".

9th Creation was a 1970s R&B, funk band who had chart hits with "Why Not Today" and "Lets Dance". Other songs, such as "Falling in Love" made the charts. They recorded for a variety of labels including PYE/ATV, Prelude and Hilltak etc..

"Let's Dance" was a hit for r&b funk group 9th Creation in 1979. It made it to the Billboard, Cash Box and Record World charts.

Broadway was an American disco band that had three chart hits. Produced by Willie Henderson they had a national hit in 1978 with their version of the "Exile hit, "Kiss You All Over". They had another chart hit with "This Funk Is Made For Dancing"

Patti Hendrix is a soul singer who recorded for the 20th Century Fox Records and Hilltak Records labels. She had a hit in 1978 with "Lighting A Fire ". It made it into the Billboard, Cash Box and Record World charts.

This Funk Is Made For Dancing was the second hit for disco band Broadway on the Hilltak Label. Composed, arranged and produced by Willie Henderson. It made both the Billboard and Cash Box charts in 1979.
