Damon Murphy (born 15 December 1984) is an Australian professional rugby union referee and a former national captain for Australia in rugby sevens. [2] His usual position was on the wing.
Damon Murphy was born in Brisbane and educated at Nudgee College. His younger brother Dallan Murphy also became a professional rugby union player.
Murphy played club rugby for Brothers Old Boys, where, playing mainly at fullback, he was the club's all-time leading try scorer [ citation needed ] with 96 tries during his career there spanning eleven seasons. He was selected for the Australian 7s team in 2004. After three seasons, including representing his country at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, [3] he refocused on fifteen-a-side rugby and signed with the Melbourne Rebels to play in the Australian Rugby Championship. [4]
Resuming his career with the national sevens team, Murphy was Australia's leading points scorer in the 2007–08 World Series. [5] He played in the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens. He also captained the side. [2]
Murphy played for the Queensland Reds in 2012, [6] although was not selected for Super Rugby.
Murphy made a rapid rise up the refereeing ranks in 2016, making his debut with the whistle in both Queensland Premier Rugby and Australia's National Rugby Championship in that year. [7] He joined the World Rugby Sevens Series referees panel for the 2016–17 season. [3] [8]
The Queensland Reds is the rugby union team for the Australian state of Queensland that competes in the Southern Hemisphere's Super Rugby competition. Prior to 1996, they were a representative team selected from the rugby union club competitions in Queensland. With the introduction of the professional Super 12 competition they moved to a model where players are contracted to the Reds through the Queensland Rugby Union rather than selected on the basis of club form.
Waisale Tikoisolomoni Serevi is a Fijian former rugby union football player and coach, and is a member of the World Rugby Hall of Fame. Serevi is renowned for his achievements in rugby sevens, while also enjoying a long career in fifteen-a-side rugby at both club and national team levels. Nicknamed "The Wizard" by commentators, he is widely considered to be the greatest rugby sevens player in the history of the game. Walter James Lewis AM is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, and coached in the 1980s and 1990s. He became a commentator for television coverage of the sport. A highly decorated Australian national captain, Lewis is widely regarded as one of the greatest ever players of rugby league. His time as a player and coach was followed by a career as a sports presenter for the Nine Network.
Henry Rangi Paul is a rugby union coach and former rugby league and rugby union player. A dual-code international, Paul won 24 caps for New Zealand in rugby league and 6 for England in rugby union, as well as rugby sevens. Paul played as a loose forward, stand-off, fullback, and occasionally as a hooker, and as a centre and fly-half in rugby union.
Berrick Steven Barnes is a former Australian professional rugby union footballer. His usual position is fly-half or inside centre. He is previously played with Japanese Top League clubs Panasonic Wild Knights and the Ricoh Black Rams, as well as in the Super Rugby competition with the NSW Waratahs and Queensland Reds. He also played for the Wallabies in international matches.
