Daniel Wilson Kodwo Addo is a Ghanaian banker who is managing director of CBG. [1] [2] He was appointed to this position in August 2018 after formation of the bank in a merger of five distressed banks in Ghana by the Bank of Ghana in the 2018 Ghana banking sector clean-up. [3] He was formerly an Executive Director of First Atlantic Bank.

Early life

Daniel Addo was educated at Accra Academy and the Institute of Professional Studies in Accra where he graduated in accounting in 1990. The following year he joined the offices of KPMG in Ghana and trained as an accountant. Addo obtained membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ghana and received an MBA in Finance from Manchester Business School after studies there between 2000 and 2002. [4] [5]

Career

Addo was employed at Standard Chartered Bank Ghana from 2003 to 2004 when he switched to work for UBA Ghana.

He was made the divisional head for corporate and energy banking on joining UBA Ghana in October 2004. In January 2009, he was promoted to the position of executive director, Wholesale and Retail Banking. [6] In February 2011, he was appointed as deputy managing director of UBA Ghana, [7] and a year later in the same month, moved to UBA Tanzania as managing director. [8]

In July 2013, Addo returned to Ghana as an executive director of First Atlantic Bank then under the management of former UBA Plc C.E.O. Gabriel Edgal. [9] Addo's last role within UBA before exiting the banking group was as managing director of UBA Tanzania from February 2012 to June 2013. At First Atlantic, Addo was in charge of business development. Addo helped the bank expand by opening up new branches within Ghana. In 2016, Addo joined Gabriel Edgal as a partner at Oakwood Green Capital when Edgal ended his role at First Atlantic. [9]

In August 2018, Addo was announced to become the managing director of CBG. [10] This made him chief executive of Ghana's second largest commercial bank by branch networks. He is the bank's first managing director. [11]

Boards

Addo is a non-executive director of real-estate company, Mobus Property, which has Sam Jonah as executive chairman. [12] He also sits on the board of insurance group, Hollard Ghana Holdings and its subsidiary Hollard Insurance.

uniBank (Ghana) Limited, commonly known as uniBank, was an indigenous private bank in Ghana, West Africa. The bank was placed in administration in March 2018 and subsequently consolidated as part of the Ghana Government's handling of its banking crisis. The collapse was controversial as it involved allegations of trading insolvently, and 5 billion cedis in illegal and related party transactions, unlawful loans and illegal acquisition of bank assets by Directors and shareholders. The Ghana banking crisis was a severe banking crisis that affected Ghana between August 2017 and January 2020. The Bank of Ghana (BoG) allowed several indigenous banks to be taken over by private companies between August 2017 and January 2019 after Nana Akufo-Addo was elected president in December 2016. Most of the indigenous banks had been at the risk of defaulting on their loans, as they had been affected by the economic fallout of the Great Recession, which caused the events leading up to the Arab Spring that occurred in North Africa beginning in 2010. The crisis is the most severe economic crisis to affect Ghana since it became an independent country in 1960. The COVID-19 pandemic arrived in Ghana towards the end of the banking crisis in 2020, dealing further damage to the country's economy.

Marufatu Abiola Bawuah is a Ghanaian finance and businesswoman. As of 2014, she became the managing director/chief executive officer of United Bank for Africa, making her the first women to have held that position. She has won several awards for her work which includes the 2016 Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana Marketing Woman of the Year and the Finance Personality of the Year Award at the Ghana Accountancy and Finance.
