Daniel Hugh Boone (born January 14,1954) is a former professional baseball pitcher. He pitched parts of three seasons in Major League Baseball,appearing in 1981,1982,and 1990. He is probably best known for the eight-year gap between his major league stints,and the improbable comeback that led him to his time with the Baltimore Orioles in 1990.
Coming out of Cal State Fullerton,Boone was selected in the 2nd round of the 1976 Major League Baseball Draft by the then-California Angels. [1] This was actually the fifth time Boone had been drafted,as he had been selected after each of his four years in college as well as the secondary phase draft in January 1976. [1] It was also the third time he was drafted by the Angels,who selected him in both 1973 and 1974,but he only signed after this draft. [1]
Boone's early promise went unfulfilled for several years,as he washed out of the Angels' system when he was released at the end of spring training in 1980. [1] He was signed just three days later by the San Diego Padres,where he made his major league debut the following April. [1] Boone pitched in 37 games for the Padres in 1981,winning 1 game,losing none,and collecting two saves with a decent 2.84 ERA.
Boone began the next season with the Padres as well,but pitched sparingly,making only 10 appearances over the first two months of the season. On June 8,he was traded to the Houston Astros for infielder Joe Pittman, [1] and after a handful of appearances in June was returned to the minor leagues. After a September call-up,he started the 1983 season back in the minors,and was released in June.
Boone signed a minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers,spending about a year in their farm system before being released once again. For the next five years,he dropped off the radar of American professional baseball.
Then,in 1989,a new league started that gave Boone a new lease on his career:the Senior Professional Baseball Association. Boone signed on with the Bradenton Explorers,where he showed off a new pitch in his arsenal:the knuckleball. He pitched well enough for them (4-3,3.16 ERA) to get a contract offer from the Orioles, [2] and in September 1990 he was back in the majors. He pitched in four games,including his first-ever major league start against the Cleveland Indians on September 30,in which he did not receive a decision. [3]
Boone's comeback drew some attention,and he even was accorded "Rookie Prospect" status in the 1991 Score baseball card set at the age of 36. [4] However,his first major league start also turned out to be his last major league appearance,as he did not make the Orioles team that spring,and after a second stint with the Explorers Boone's career was well and truly over.
James Hoyt Wilhelm, nicknamed "Old Sarge", was an American Major League Baseball pitcher with the New York Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, California Angels, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs, and Los Angeles Dodgers between 1952 and 1972. Wilhelm was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985.

He played in Major League Baseball as a left-handed pitcher in 1965 and from 1969 to 1983 for the California Angels, New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles and Montreal Expos. Early in his career, May had a live fastball, but was known best for his "sharp-breaking curve." May was the 1980 American League ERA leader.
Erik Paul Schullstrom is a former professional baseball pitcher who played for the Minnesota Twins in its 1994 and 1995 seasons. Listed at 6 ft 5 in (1.96 m), 220 pounds, Schullstrom threw and batted right-handed. He was born in San Diego, California and attended Alameda High School where he was voted Oakland Tribune Northern California Pitcher of the year in 1987. He later attended Fresno State University where he was a Freshman All-American in 1988 after going 14-2 with 11 complete games. The Bulldogs were at one point ranked #1 in the nation after winning 32 consecutive games, and eventually finished 7th in the 1988 College World Series. He also was a member of Team USA in 1989.
Charles Wallis Haeger was an American professional baseball player. He was one of the few knuckleball pitchers in Major League Baseball (MLB) during his career. He played in MLB for the Chicago White Sox, San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers. He was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot at the Grand Canyon on October 3, 2020, shortly after the suspected murder of his ex-girlfriend.
Darrel Wayne Akerfelds was a professional baseball pitcher. He also served as the bullpen coach of Major League Baseball's San Diego Padres, from 2001 until his death. He also pitched in the major leagues in parts of five seasons from 1986 to 1991 for the Oakland Athletics, Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers, and Philadelphia Phillies.

A right-hander, he pitched in the major leagues for nine seasons from 1973 to 1981 for the Baltimore Orioles (1973–1976) and Cleveland Indians (1977–1981). He was one of 24 ballplayers who profited from the advent of MLB free agency following the 1976 season.
