Danny Porte (born 18 June 1975 in England) is an English former rugby union player who played for Glasgow Warriors at the Tighthead Prop position. Porte began playing rugby with the 1st XV for Dover Grammar School for Boys where he excelled in sports. [1]

Career Debut with Glasgow Warriors

Porte began his professional career with Glasgow Warriors in 1996. [2] He was on the bench for Glasgow's European Conference match against Montferrand on 19 October 1996 as well as for Glasgow's game against Newport RFC on 28 October 1996. [3] He came off the bench for Glasgow in their Heineken Cup home match against London Wasps during the Season 1997-98. At the time, Porte was also playing for amateur side Glasgow Academicals [4] before they merged with Glasgow High Kelvinside to form Glasgow Hawks. In 1998, he joined Watsonians RFC. [5] and then played for Waterloo in 2000 before seeking to transition to a career in teaching. [6]

Exeter University and Teacher Training

With a Sports scholarship, Porte attended Exeter University between 2000-2004 as a mature student studying for a 4 year degree in Physical Education, Exercise and Sports Science with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). Porte naturally played rugby at university and was in the winning team in the British University Sports Association final against Northumbria University at Twickenham. At Exeter, he also played for Exeter Chiefs [2] gaining over 100 caps for the club. [7] [8] In 2004, after graduating, Porte initially registered as a teacher with Devon County Council [9] but secured appointments overseas in the Cayman Islands, in 2006, [2] and, later, in France. [10]

Launceston, Plymouth Albion, Barbarians and Newton Abbot

Despite a change to teaching, Porte pursued his rugby career. In 2008, he played for Launceston [2] but was released by them in January 2009. [2] He joined Plymouth Albion in January 2009. [2] [11] He also played for the Barbarians in 2009 against a Combined Services team [12] [13] [14] and for Newton Abbot in 2011. [15]

Moving to New Zealand

In Summer 2013, Porte left Newton Abbot RFC and moved permanently to New Zealand. [16] where he is now a full-time PE teacher and sports coach at Christchurch Boys' High School, an independent school. [17]

Gary Kingdom is an English rugby union player who can play in a variety of positions most notably at Full back or Centre. He is currently playing for Taunton Titans in National League 2 South but has played higher level rugby for both Exeter Chiefs and Plymouth Albion as well as representing the Devon county rugby side with whom he has won the County Championship twice. Nat Saumi, real name Nacenieli, is a retired Fijian rugby union player who is currently a coach. A versatile back, Nat could play at fly-half, centre or full back. Despite having offers to play Premiership rugby, Nat spent his career in England playing for south-west clubs, most notably with Penzance & Newlyn and Plymouth, whom he also coached. An outstanding points scorer both in terms of kicking and tries, Nat became one of the most prolific points scorers of all-time in National League 2 South with over 700 points, including a divisional record of 374 points in a season, achieved in 2001 while playing for Penzance-Newlyn. As well as playing club rugby, Nat has also represented Fiji Sevens, Barbarians and Cornwall with whom he won the Bill Beaumont Cup back in 1999.

The Devon Senior Cup is an annual rugby union league and cup club competition organized by the Devon Rugby Football Union. It was first introduced in the 1886-87 season and the inaugural competition was won by Tiverton. During the early years of the cup the format changed several times from a knock-out competition to a league format, then to hybrid league/cup, then back to being a knock-out cup once again. The competition also was had periods of inactivity, with World War I preventing play for a number of seasons and then the cup being cancelled in the 1930s before being reintroduced for the 1969-70 season when it was won by St. Luke's College. The Havill Plate was introduced in the 1970s for teams knocked out of the first round of the cup which would continue until 1999. Competitions similar to the Havill Plate were introduced in 2009 for teams that got knocked out of the earlier stages of the cup were introduced - plate and vase - but these were discontinued due to a lack of interest by the clubs involved.

The Devon Junior Cup is an annual rugby union knock-out club competition organized by the Devon Rugby Football Union. It was first introduced in the 1888–89 season when it was won by Paignton. During the pre-war years the Devon Junior Cup was open to lower ranked teams in the county, along with the reserve sides of the larger clubs such as Exeter and Devonport Albion. Like the senior cup competition, the junior cup has periods of inactivity over its history due to World Wars, and was cancelled towards the end of the 1950s only to return in the 1986–87 season when it was won by Exeter Saracens. The Havill Plate was introduced in the 1970s for teams knocked out of the first round of the Devon Senior Cup but later included clubs knocked out of the early stages of the Junior Cup – it was discontinued after the 1998–99 season.

Matthew Shepherd is an English and Cornish rugby union player who currently plays at scrum-half or full back for Redruth in National League 2 South, having previously played for Plymouth Albion in National League 1. An extremely reliable points scorer with a knack for scoring important tries, he was instrumental in Cornwall's County Championship victories in 2015 and 2016 and has also been capped by England Counties XV. As well as playing union, Shepherd has played summer rugby league for the Cornish Rebels.

Ryan Westren is a Cornish rugby union player who is currently a player-coach at Launceston, where he plays at outside centre. A club legend at Launceston, he previously played professional rugby union with Cornish Pirates and London Scottish, as well as captaining Cornwall in the county championships. His brother, Murray Westren, is also a rugby player, while their father, Phil Westren, played for Cornish Pirates when they were known as Penzance/Newlyn.
