Darleen Bogart OC is a Canadian Braille literacy advocate. She is a founding member of Canadian Braille Authority and served as its president. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2017.

Early life and education

Bogart was born in Churchbridge, Saskatchewan, the youngest of seven children. [1]

Career

Bogart's mother-in-law was involved with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) and encouraged her to volunteer. [1] She became a volunteer at the Women’s College Hospital beginning in the 1960's. [2] Bogart joined the Braille Authority of North America (BANA) Planning Committee board from 1982 and 1988. [3] She eventually became chair of the BANA in 1991 and was a key figure in the adoption of Unified English Braille in 2004. [1] As a result, she received the 1992 Arthur Napier Magill Distinguished Service Award from the CNIB. [4] From 1991 until 2012, she was a founding member and President of the Canadian Braille Authority (now known as Braille Literacy Canada). [2]

In 2015, Bogart received the BANA Braille Excellence Award [3] and was later awarded the Volunteer Recognition Award from the CNIB. [5] Two years later, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2017. [6] Due to her advocacy work, Bogart is an honorary life member of the Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario. [2] As of 2017, Bogart sits on the Women's College Research Institute Research Ethics Board and the Advisory Council of the Foundation. [7]

CNIB Foundation organization for the blind

The CNIB Foundation is a volunteer agency and charitable organization dedicated to assisting Canadians who are blind or living with vision loss, and to provide information about vision health for all Canadians. Founded in 1918 as the Canadian National Institute for the Blind to assist soldiers who had been blinded in the First World War, CNIB originally offered sheltered care and specialized employment to people with vision loss. It has since expanded to include other programs and services, including research, public education, rehabilitation counselling and training, advocacy and an alternative-format library for people living with a print disability. It is a member of the Braille Authority of North America.

Nishan-e-Imtiaz Civil decoration of Pakistan

The Nishan-e-Imtiaz is one of the state organized civil decorations of State of Pakistan. It is awarded for achievements towards world recognition for Pakistan or an outstanding service for the country. However, the award is not limited to citizens of Pakistan and, while it is a civilian award, it can also be awarded to military personnel and worn on the uniform. Nishan, translates as Decoration/Order, is a highly restricted and prestigious award roughly equivalent to Presidential Medal of Freedom and Order of the British Empire, and is the first category award of Order of Imtiaz. The other three descending categories are Hilal-i-Imtiaz, Sitara-i-Imtiaz and Tamgha-e-Imtiaz. Usually, it is regarded as the highest award one can achieve in Pakistan since the higher award Nishan-e-Pakistan is awarded only to foreign Heads of States.

A sighted child who is reading at a basic level should be able to understand common words and answer simple questions about the information presented. They should also have enough fluency to get through the material in a timely manner. Over the course of a child's education, these foundations are built on to teach higher levels of math, science, and comprehension skills. Children who are blind not only have the education disadvantage of not being able to see: they also miss out on the very fundamental parts of early and advanced education if not provided with the necessary tools.

IPA Braille is the modern standard Braille encoding of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), as recognized by the International Council on English Braille.

Braille Authority of North America organization

The Braille Authority of North America (BANA) is the standardizing body of English Braille orthography in the United States and Canada. It consists of a number of member organizations, such as the Braille Institute of America, the National Braille Association, and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.

Distinguished Conduct Medal (Natal) Military decoration for bravery in Natal

In 1895, Queen Victoria authorised Colonial governments to adopt various British military decorations and medals and to award them to their local military forces. The Colony of Natal introduced this system in August 1895 and, in 1897, instituted the Distinguished Conduct Medal (Natal), post-nominal letters DCM.

Bana al-Abed Syrian girl who tweets from Aleppo

Bana al-Abed is a Syrian girl from Aleppo, Syria who, with assistance from her English-speaking mother, sent messages through Twitter documenting the siege of the city. Most of these tweets have documented issues such as airstrikes, destruction, hunger, displacement, the prospect of her and her family's death, her longing for a peaceful childhood, the al-Bab district of eastern Aleppo, and her general calls for peace.

Mae Brown (1935-1973) was the second deaf-blind woman and the first deaf-blind Canadian to earn a university degree. She graduated from the University of Toronto Scarborough in 1972.
