Darren Burke (born 25 April 1967) is a Canadian university professor, researcher and entrepreneur. [1]

Early life

Darren Burke was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He completed an undergraduate degree in Physical Education and a master's degree in Science from Dalhousie University. He was awarded a PhD in Exercise Physiology at the University of Saskatchewan in 2001 with the thesis "Individual creatine pool size and responsiveness associated with creatine supplementation". [2]

Career

In 2001, Burke started a tenure track role as an assistant professor at St. Francis Xavier University in 2001, and was promoted to associate professor with Tenure in 2004. In 2008, he left his academia career to start his first business. [3] He applied his research to create a new line of sports nutrition products encompassing protein powders, energy capsules, and muscle-enhancing supplements tailored for professional athletes.[ citation needed ]

In 2013 his company, Rivalus was acquired by Nutrivo. [4] In 2017, Burke started working on a sustainable technology to decrease food waste and conserve nutrients in fruits and vegetables which would have otherwise been discarded. In 2018, he partnered with former NHL hockey player TJ Galiardi to launch Outcast Foods which is a sustainable technology-based company aimed at upcycling discarded fruits and vegetables bound for landfills. [5] [6] He served as the CEO of Outcast Foods till the end of 2021.

In the same year he received the EY Entrepreneur of the Year for Atlantic Canada. [7]

Burke returned to academia in 2023 as an Industry Professor at McMaster University to help the university set up a makerspace and develop a curriculum for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. [8] [9]

Bodybuilding supplements are dietary supplements commonly used by those involved in bodybuilding, weightlifting, mixed martial arts, and athletics for the purpose of facilitating an increase in lean body mass. Bodybuilding supplements may contain ingredients that are advertised to increase a person's muscle, body weight, athletic performance, and decrease a person's percent body fat for desired muscle definition. Among the most widely used are high protein drinks, pre-workout blends, branched-chain amino acids (BCAA), glutamine, arginine, essential fatty acids, creatine, HMB, whey protein, ZMA, and weight loss products. Supplements are sold either as single ingredient preparations or in the form of "stacks" – proprietary blends of various supplements marketed as offering synergistic advantages.

EAS was a distributor of creatine nutritional supplements with approximately 300 staff, annual sales exceeding $300 million, and offices/distributors in 54 countries.

Pre-workout is a generic term for a range of bodybuilding supplement products used by athletes and weightlifters to enhance athletic performance. Supplements are taken to increase endurance, energy, and focus during a workout. Pre-workout supplements contain a variety of ingredients such as caffeine and creatine, differing by capsule or powder products. The first pre-workout product entered the market in 1982, and since then the category has grown in use. Some pre-workout products contain ingredients linked to adverse effects. Although these products are not regulated, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns consumers to be cautious when consuming them.
