Darryl DeAngelo Terrell (born Detroit, 1991) is an African-American artist based in Brooklyn, who is a lens-based media artist, activist, curator, DJ, educator, performer and writer, known for their photography and videography. They identify as queer, femme, and non-binary, which has informed their art work. [1] [2] [3] Terrell's work explores issues of history, displacement, femme identity, sexuality, and gender, amongst other issues. [4] [1]
Terrell was born in 1991 in Detroit, Michigan, where they were also raised. [2] They attended Wayne State University, where they graduated with a BFA degree in 2015. [5] [6] This degree was followed by study at School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where Terrell received a MFA. degree in photography in 2018. [3] [7] [8] [9]
While attended graduate school, they began experimenting with performance art, and explored gender expression; and for this they created an alter-ego, "Dion". [1] [2] The performance work by Dion was foundation to his photograph, I Look Like My Momma (Self-portrait 1980). [2] Their 2017 work, #Project20s, was photographs of 200 black or brown people in their 20s before Terrell turned age 30. [2] [10]
Terrell has been awarded the Kresge Arts Fellowship (2019), [1] [11] Document Detroit Fellowship (2019), and the Luminarts Fellowship in Visual Arts (2018). Terrell's work is included in the permanent art collection at the Art Institute of Chicago. [12]
Terrell is influenced by African-American folklore and music; with books such as ‘Mules and Men’ by Zora Neale Hurston and ‘Songs of Solomon’ by Toni Morrison and music styles including jazz, spiritual jazz, house, soul and hip-hop. They are also heavily influenced by their community that they describe as “bold, radical, queer, fighting black people”. [13]
Since leaving university, they have become a 2023 Baxter St Resident, [14] 2022 Fire Island Artist in Resident, 2022 Lighthouse Work Fellow, 2021 Black Rock Senegal Artist in Resident, 2021 The Black Embodiment Studio Arts writing Resident, 2020/21 Red Bull House of Art Resident, 2019/20 Document Detroit Fellow, 2019 Kresge Arts in Detroit Fellow in Visual Arts and a 2018 Luminarts Fellow in Visual Arts. Their project A Way to Get Gone (2020-2022), which was exhibited at NXTHVN’s Gallery along with artist Hong Hong in the ‘Let Them Roam Freely’ exhibition. [15]
Each piece in this project is a photograph of what Terrell describes as ‘Portals’. [16] These ‘portals’ are created through Terrell dressed in gold and dancing in front of the lens to capture only slight form and movement, to ‘trick’ the viewers into seeing a gold, shimmering shape. Gold is used not only as it represents power but also “like a guide, a way home”. [17] They are portals to freedom for black people.
Each photograph is titled with a set of coordinates to the place was taken. A lot of these places are places of historical and current violence of white supremacy, and these portals are placed as escape routes. Terrell describes using these locations as “a way to honour this land and the ancestors that once walk it.” [18] The images are shown alongside an audio collage, which has a monologue from Sun Ra’s 1972 film ‘Space is the Place’. [16]
In #Project20s (2017), they got photographs of over 200 black or Latinx people between the ages of 20 and 30. [19] Each photograph is processed as a cyanotype stained with black tea or coffee partly for the aesthetics to fit with the skin tones but also inspired by Louis Agassiz's Slave Daguerreotypes. [20] As with their other work, they were heavily influenced by their upbringing in Detroit and hip-hop music, with two songs having particular influence on this project: We Don’t Care by Kanye West and Chapter Six by Kendrick Lamar. For these portraits, they reached out to communities, groups and collectives, with the plan of showcasing these photographs projected on walls in communities affected by gentrification “as a reminder of black and brown people being removed from their neighbourhoods and communities for capital gain”. Dion is Terrell’s femme alter ego, who they use to explore what it means to be desired and included. In this series of self-portrait photography, video, performance, text and sound, they incorporate influences from the black urban aesthetic to show off their blackness, queerness and femininity. [21]

Suzanne Valadon was a French painter who was born Marie-Clémentine Valadon at Bessines-sur-Gartempe, Haute-Vienne, France. In 1894, Valadon became the first woman painter admitted to the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. She was also the mother of painter Maurice Utrillo.
Marie Laurencin was a French painter and printmaker. She became an important figure in the Parisian avant-garde as a member of the Cubists associated with the Section d'Or.
Elizabeth Catlett, born as Alice Elizabeth Catlett, also known as Elizabeth Catlett Mora was an American and Mexican sculptor and graphic artist best known for her depictions of the Black-American experience in the 20th century, which often focused on the female experience. She was born and raised in Washington, D.C., to parents working in education, and was the grandchild of formerly enslaved people. It was difficult for a black woman at this time to pursue a career as a working artist. Catlett devoted much of her career to teaching. However, a fellowship awarded to her in 1946 allowed her to travel to Mexico City, where she settled and worked with the Taller de Gráfica Popular for twenty years and became head of the sculpture department for the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas. In the 1950s, her main means of artistic expression shifted from print to sculpture, though she never gave up the former.

Mickalene Thomas is a contemporary African-American visual artist best known as a painter of complex works using rhinestones, acrylic, and enamel. Thomas's collage work is inspired from popular art histories and movements, including Impressionism, Cubism, Dada, the Harlem Renaissance, and selected works by the Afro-British painter Chris Ofili. Her work draws from Western art history, pop art, and visual culture to examine ideas around femininity, beauty, race, sexuality, and gender.
Charles McGee was an American artist and educator known for creating paintings, assemblages, and sculptures. His artwork is in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. He also had several large-scale public works in the city of Detroit.
Nick Cave is an American sculptor, dancer, performance artist, and professor. He is best known for his Soundsuit series: wearable assemblage fabric sculptures that are bright, whimsical, and other-worldly, often made with found objects. He also trained as a dancer with Alvin Ailey and often incorporates dance and performance into his works. His later sculptures have focused on color theory and included mixed media and large-scale installations. He lives in Chicago, Illinois, and directs the graduate fashion program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He continues to work on Soundsuits as well as works completed as a sculptor, dancer, and performance artist.
Zanele Muholi is a South African artist and visual activist working in photography, video, and installation. Muholi's work focuses on race, gender and sexuality with a body of work that dates back to the early 2000s, documenting and celebrating the lives of South Africa's Black lesbian, gay, transgender, and intersex communities. Muholi is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, explaining that "I'm just human".
Sergine Andre (‘Djinn’), born in the Artibonite region of Haiti, is an artist who has lived and worked in Brussels since 2010. Her paintings express an identity that straddles two worlds. Her imagination draws from both the magical-spiritual tradition of her home region and the Haitian artistic avant-garde and in her paintings she brings together contrasting themes such as life and death, light and shadows.
Diana J. Nucera, better known by her stage name Mother Cyborg, is a Detroit-based artist, DJ, and educator. Born in Chicago and raised in Frankfort, Indiana. Nucera began using the name Mother Cyborg on October 11, 2011, while DJing at a Halloween party. Mother Cyborg continued DJing, hosting a monthly gig, deemed the "Temple of Cyborg", at Detroit's Temple Bar as well as performing her own music live. Mother Cyborg released her debut album Pressure Systems on April 29, 2017.
McArthur Binion is an American artist based in Chicago, Illinois. Binion was born in Macon, Mississippi. He holds a BFA from Wayne State University (1971) in Detroit, Michigan, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He was a Professor of Art at Columbia College in Chicago from 1993 to 2015.
Charles Gaines is an American visual artist, whose work interrogates the discourse of aesthetics, politics, and philosophy. Taking the form of drawings, photographic series and video installations, the work consistently involves the use of systems, predominantly in the form of the grid, often in combination with photography. His work is rooted in conceptual art – in dialogue with artists such as Sol LeWitt, Lawrence Weiner and Mel Bochner – and Gaines is committed to its tenets of engaging cognition and language. As one of the only African-American conceptual artists working in the 1970s, a time when political expressionism was a prevailing concern among African-American artists, Gaines was an outlier in his pursuit of abstraction and non-didactic approach to race and politics. There is a strong musical thread running through much of Gaines' work, evident in his repeated use of musical scores as well in his engagement with the idea of indeterminacy, as similar to John Cage and Sol LeWitt. He lives in Los Angeles, California.

Ruth Adler Schnee was a German-born American textile designer and interior designer based in Michigan. Schnee was best known for her modern prints and abstract-patterns of organic and geometric forms. She opened the Ruth Adler-Schnee Design Studio with her spouse Edward Schnee in Detroit, which operated until 1960. The studio produced textiles and later branched off into Adler-Schnee Associates home decor, interiors, and furniture.

Ahya Simone is an American multidisciplinary artist. Based in Detroit, she is best known for her work as a harpist and for creating and starring in the web series Femme Queen Chronicles.
Shirley Woodson is an American visual artist, educator, mentor, and art collector who is most known for her spectacular figurative paintings depicting African American history. Her work that spans a career of 60 years and counting can be found in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and the Studio Museum in Harlem, among other institutions. Woodson was named the 2021 Kresge Eminent Artist. The Detroit Institute of Arts exhibited 11 of her pieces in "Shirley Woodson: Shield of the Nile" Dec. 18, 2021 through June 12, 2022, the museum's first solo exhibition of Woodson's work. A painting by Woodson is featured in the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit exhibition "Ground Up: Reflections on Black Abstraction" April 8-August 16, 2022.

Fire Island Art Residency (FIAR) is a New York organization founded in 2011 as the first residency to provide resources to emerging lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer-identifying artists and poets. FIAR provides free live/work space to visual artists who create, socialize, and immerse themselves in the Fire Island community for four weeks during the summer. They are visited by renowned artists and scholars, who interact with residents through studio visits, dinners, and discussions, providing support and feedback.
