Dave Kaplan is an American music industry executive. [1] [2] He has managed numerous musical artists, including UB40, Glen Campbell, Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, Brian Setzer, [3] Sublime, [4] and Butthole Surfers. [5] He founded and is the CEO of the independent music label Surfdog Records. [2] Kaplan's producing credits include albums for Dave Stewart, [2] Glen Campbell, Brian Setzer, Stray Cats, Dan Hicks, SuperHeavy, and Gary Hoey. [6]

Early life and education

Kaplan was born in Phoenix, Arizona. [2] He graduated from UC Santa Barbara, [2] [3] and later became a certified public accountant. [1] [3]

Career

Kaplan joined the accounting firm Ernst & Whinney in California as an auditor in 1981, but left in 1983 because he disliked the firm's rigid work culture. [1]

In 1985, he founded Dave Kaplan Management (DKM) to manage musicians. [2] DKM's first client was the reggae band UB40. [2] [7]

Kaplan became the manager for Brian Setzer in 1992, [1] and as of 2021, Kaplan had also produced or co-produced more than a dozen albums involving Setzer. [6]

Kaplan founded Surfdog Records in the early 1990s. [2] [8]

In 1999, Kaplan became the manager for Butthole Surfers, and signed the act to a joint recording deal with Surfdog and Hollywood Records. [5]

Kaplan signed recording deals with Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, led by Dan Hicks, in 2000 [9] [8] and British soul singer Joss Stone in 2011 to co-produce her album LP1. [10] He produced or was the executive producer for six of Hicks' albums between 2000 and 2017, and was the executive producer for Stone's LP1 album. [6]

In 2012, Kaplan became co-manager of country singer Glen Campbell, who had just been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, and was the executive producer of his final album Ghost on the Canvas. [11] Kaplan was also the producer of Campbell's penultimate studio album, See You There. [6]

In 2013, Kaplan signed Eric Clapton to Surfdog Records and distributed his new album, Old Sock , in North America. [2] [3]

Kaplan is also the manager of the band Sublime. [4] In 2019, Kaplan was a co-producer of a documentary about the band Sublime, which was titled Sublime. [12]

Charitable activities

Kaplan served on the board of directors for an environmental non-profit called the Surfrider Foundation. [13] From 1996 through 1999, he also produced or co-produced three ocean-themed music albums to benefit the foundation, which included contributions from bands such as The Beach Boys, The Beastie Boys, and Pearl Jam. Stewart was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020 and the duo were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. Outside of Eurythmics, Stewart has written and produced songs for artists such as Ringo Starr, Stevie Nicks, Mick Jagger and Tom Petty.

Electriclarryland is the seventh studio album by the American rock band Butthole Surfers, released on May 6, 1996, by Capitol Records. This album brought Butthole Surfers their first Top 40 hit with "Pepper". The album was certified gold by the RIAA on August 20, 1996. The title of this album is a parody of Jimi Hendrix's third studio album entitled Electric Ladyland. This is the second time the band has used a parody title for one of their releases. The first was Hairway to Steven, which references the song "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin. The album's original title was going to be Oklahoma!, but fearing lawsuits, Capitol forced the band to change the name.

Paul Leary Walthall, known as Paul Leary, is an American musician and music producer from Austin, Texas, best known as the lead guitarist and occasional lead vocalist for the rock band Butthole Surfers. He is also the producer of a number of songs and albums by other bands, including U2, Sublime, Meat Puppets, Daniel Johnston, The Reverend Horton Heat, Pepper, Maggie Walters, Bad Livers, Slightly Stoopid, and The Refreshments. Leary produced Sublime with Rome's debut album, Yours Truly.

In Australia, the song peaked at number 15 on the ARIA Singles Chart and was ranked number four on Triple J's Hottest 100 of 1996. Ready Steady Go! is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Drake Bell. It marks his third release on an independent record label, and his first for Surfdog Records. The album is Bell's first album in almost eight years, following It's Only Time, which was released in 2006. Originally slated for an early 2013 release, Ready, Steady, Go! was released on April 22, 2014. The lead single, "Bitchcraft", was released on January 28, 2014. Water for Your Soul is the seventh studio album by English singer and songwriter Joss Stone, released on 31 July 2015 through her own label, Stone'd Records. It marks her first studio album of original material since LP1 (2011), following the release of the covers album The Soul Sessions Vol. 2 (2012). Musically, it incorporates reggae and hip hop with influences from many different genres, including soul, R&B, world, gospel, Latin and some Indian and Irish influence. The art design was crafted by Irish designer Aoife Hastings, who won a competition launched by Stone through social media which gave fans the opportunity to create her new album cover art. This exposure propelled Aoife's career forward, enabling her to work on renowned brands such as Coca-Cola, Heineken, Diageo, Mondelēz and Pepsi, among many others.

Alien Fashion Show is an American swing revival band, formed in Los Angeles in 1996. After being invited to perform as Brian Setzer's opening act during his Fall 1998 tour, the group signed to Surfdog, then Hollywood Records, and released their eponymous debut album in 1998. Also in 1998, the group drew attention when "Detroit Swing City" became the first-ever song to be released by a major record label as a free MP3 download. Reaction to this new method was generally mixed, but both the group and the label defended the approach, and other labels began adopting the release medium as well.
