David Black was a footballer who played at centre-forward.
Black played for Blackburn Rovers before joining Burslem Port Vale in October 1895. [1] On 19 October, he made his debut in a heavy 8–2 defeat to Darwen. [1] He scored his first goal for the club two days later, in a 5–4 victory over Liverpool at the Athletic Ground. [1] However, after seven Second Division and two FA Cup appearances the club declared him to be "a 1 stone (14 lb; 6.4 kg) too heavy" and so he left by mutual consent in January 1896 and headed for Scotland. Port Vale Football Club are a professional football club based in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, England, which compete in EFL League Two, the fourth tier of the English football league system. Vale are named after the valley of ports on the Trent and Mersey Canal. They have never played top-flight football, and hold the record for the most seasons in the English Football League (112) without reaching the first tier. After playing at the Athletic Ground in Cobridge and The Old Recreation Ground in Hanley, the club returned to Burslem when Vale Park was opened in 1950. Outside the ground is a statue of Roy Sproson, who played 842 competitive games for the club. The club's traditional rivals are Stoke City, and games between the two are known as the Potteries derby.

This includes 128 consecutive appearances between April 1954 and March 1957. He is also sixteenth on the all-time Football League appearance list.

He spent 1981 to 1984 with West Bromwich Albion, and also played on loan at Lincoln City, but spent most of his career at Port Vale. He was voted Port Vale F.C. Player of the Year in 1984–85, helped the club to win promotion out of the Fourth Division in 1985–86, and won the Third Division play-off final with the club in 1989. He was forced into early retirement in June 1992, following a broken leg sustained in October 1989.
The 1936–37 season was Port Vale's 31st season of football in the English Football League and their first season back in the Third Division North following their relegation from the Second Division. For the first time in the club's history, rivals Stoke City were playing two leagues above them. The "Valiants" played in white shirts and black socks – a look they kept for the rest of the century and beyond. Manager Warney Cresswell would be the first of Vale's managers to be recognizable as a manager to modern observers, training the players to ensure fitness, allowing them to relax together as a group, and searching the country for fresh talent. His modern techniques did not ensure promotion, despite a mid-season unbeaten run of thirteen games in an otherwise unremarkable season.
The 1978–79 season was Port Vale's 67th season of football in the Football League, and their first season back in the Fourth Division following their relegation from the Third Division. Bernie Wright was highly impressive with his fifteen goals, though the rest of the team limped to a sixteenth-place finish, and exited both cup competitions at the first stage. This occurred with unrest in the boardroom behind the scenes, unrest amongst fans on the terraces, and annoyance from Butler towards the fans for abusing his players. Butler broke club transfer-records in both signing players and selling them.
