David Char Navas is a Colombian politician who served as Member of the Chamber of Representatives of Colombia from 2002 to 2006 and as Senator of Colombia from 2006 to 2008. [1] He was forced to resign to his seat in the Senate due to controversies surrounding two incidents for which he was being investigated, the first related to a city contract that his company Los Ángeles Ltd signed with the then Mayor of Barranquilla Bernardo Hoyos Montoya; [2] the second came to surface after his name appeared in a seized computer of Jorge 40, a paramilitary leader of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia. Family

David comes from a well established and influential, Syrian-Arab-Colombian family, [4] [5] [6] he is the son of Habib Char Abdala and Vivian Navas. He is the nephew of Fuad Char Abdala, and cousin of Arturo and Alejandro Char Chaljub, all politicians from the Atlántico Department. His family are the majority shareholders of the Junior Barranquilla, the city's foremost soccer team, [7] and founders of Olimpica S.A., a chain of supermarkets in Colombia.

Independent Movement of Absolute Renovation Political party in Colombia

The Independent Movement of Absolute Renovation is a social and political party in Colombia, founded on March 21, 2000 by 51,095 Colombians led by lawyer and former senator Carlos Alberto Baena and Alexandra Moreno Piraquive. The party also has functions as a non-profit organization. It has representation in the Chamber of Representatives and in the Senate of the Congress of the Republic of Colombia, and has also participated in the public corporations of Colombia at a regional level, being stated as the eight most influential political force in the country.

Carlos Gaviria Díaz

Carlos Emilio Gaviria Díaz was a Colombian lawyer, professor and politician. He served as the 5th Chief Magistrate of the Constitutional Court of Colombia, where he served as a Magistrate from 1993 to 2001. After retiring from the Court, he went into politics becoming a Senator of Colombia in 2002, and running for President as an Alternative Democratic Pole candidate in the 2006 presidential election, ultimately losing to ex-president Álvaro Uribe Vélez, who was seeking his second term in office.

Álvaro Araújo Castro is a Colombian economist and former actor and Senator of Colombia. A Liberal politician, and leader of the ALAS-Team Colombia political movement, he was arrested and jailed in 2007 for participating in parapolitics. Prior to serving in the Senate, he was also a Member of the Chamber of Representatives of Colombia from 1994 to 2001.

Colombian parapolitics scandal

Alejandro Char Chaljub

Alejandro Char Chaljub, commonly known as Álex Char, is a Colombian politician. He served two terms as Mayor of Barranquilla from 2008 to 2011 and 2016 to 2019. A civil engineer and member of the Radical Change Party, he was councilor for the Liberal Party in 1997 and in 2000 ran for the Governorship of the Department of Atlántico. Initial ballot results gave victory to his contender Ventura Díaz Mejía, but after a lengthy and often criticized process, the Administrative Supreme Court of Colombia reviewed the election results and found Char to be rightful winner of the race and allowed him to serve the remaining period of his term in 2003.

Rodrigo Rivera Salazar

Rodrigo Rivera Salazar is a Colombian politician. A lawyer, diplomat, professor and journalist, Rivera served in the Congress first as a Member of the Chamber of Representatives for two terms from 1990 to 1998, and then as Senator of Colombia for two terms from 1998 to 2006, when he retired from Congress to run, ultimately unsuccessfully, for the 2006 Liberal presidential nomination. In 2010, Rivera was appointed Minister of National Defence of Colombia by President Juan Manuel Santos Calderón and served until his resignation the following year.

Fuad Ricardo Char Abdala is a Senator of Colombia serving his fifth term in Congress, albeit not all consecutively. He is the founder of Grupo Empresarial Olímpica, the second biggest company in the Colombian Caribbean coast after Reficar.

Arturo Char Chaljub is a former Senator of Colombia. Prior to his appointment he served as First Secretary of the Colombian Embassy in London.

Organización Radial Olímpica (ORO) is a Colombian group of radio stations, which belongs to the wealthy and influential Char Abdalá family from Barranquilla. It started in 1969 with the purchase of Radio Regalo AM of Barranquilla, which would be renamed Radio Olímpica AM, after the homonymous chain of supermarkets and drugstores created by the Chars. Olímpica expanded first in AM in the Caribbean coast, later moving some of its stations to FM. In 1985 it would set their first station in Bogotá.

2018 Colombian presidential election

Presidential elections were held in Colombia on 27 May 2018. As no candidate received a majority of the vote, the second round of voting was held on 17 June. Incumbent President Juan Manuel Santos was ineligible for re-election because of already serving for two terms. President Iván Duque was elected to serve a four-year term from 7 August 2018 to 7 August 2022.

2016 Colombian peace agreement referendum

The Colombian peace agreement referendum was held on October 2, 2016 to ratify the final agreement on the termination of the Colombian conflict between the Colombian government and the FARC guerillas. It failed with 50.2% voting against it and 49.8% voting in favor. Approval of the referendum was taken for granted in Colombia based on opinion polls. Explanations for the surprising "No" victory fell along the similar ideological lines of Donald Trump's victory in the US Elections and the Brexit vote in the UK, both also held in 2016.

Claudia López Hernández Colombian politician

Claudia Nayibe López Hernández is a Colombian politician. She was a Senator of the Republic of Colombia and was the vice-presidential candidate in the 2018 presidential election for the Green Alliance party. In October 2019, she was elected mayor of Bogotá, the first woman and as well the first openly LGBT person to be elected to this position.

The virus was confirmed to have reached Colombia on 6 March 2020. From 17 March to 1 September, Colombia denied entry to those who were not Colombian citizens, permanent residents or diplomats, and as of 30 September 2020, a negative PCR test result issued within 96 hours prior to departure is required to enter the country by air. Land and river borders remain closed until at least 1 March 2021, while sea borders reopened on 1 December 2020.
