David Trevor Molyneux MBE is a British Labour politician and leader of Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council in Greater Manchester. As leader he is also a member of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and is the combined authority's portfolio lead for Resources and Investment. [1]
First elected to the council in 1982,Molyneux represents the ward of Ince. He was elected as leader of the council in 2018 following Peter Smith's departure from the role after 27 years in post. [2]
Molyneux was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2022 Birthday Honours for services to local government and the community in Wigan. [3]
Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county and combined authority area in North West England,with a population of 2.8 million;comprising ten metropolitan boroughs:Manchester,Salford,Bolton,Bury,Oldham,Rochdale,Stockport,Tameside,Trafford and Wigan. The Mayor of Greater Manchester is the directly elected metro mayor of Greater Manchester,responsible for strategic governance in the region that includes health,transport,housing,strategic planning,waste management,policing,the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and skills. The creation of the Mayor of Greater Manchester was agreed between the then Chancellor of the Exchequer,George Osborne,and Greater Manchester's 10 district council leaders. The 2021 Greater Manchester mayoral election was held on 6 May 2021 to elect the mayor of Greater Manchester. This election,alongside other local and mayoral elections across England and Wales,was originally scheduled to take place on 7 May 2020,but was delayed by the UK Government on 13 March 2020,due to the unfolding COVID-19 pandemic. The election took place on the same day as council elections within the city-region,including the election for the mayor of Salford,as well as elections across England and Wales. It was the second election to the position of mayor. It used the supplementary vote as its electoral system.

She was also,ex-officio,the Chair of the Greater Manchester Pension Fund which is managed by Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council.
