David Ogewu is a Nigerian politician and Federal House of Representatives member-elect for Oju/Obi Federal Constituency on the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He defeated the incumbent Reps member Samson Okwu of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the 25 February 2023 presidential and National Assembly elections. [1]

Political career

Ogewu was first elected to the House of Representatives in the 2019 elections on the ticket of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). [2] That election was nullified following a petition filed at the 2019 National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal by his opponent Samson Okwu of the PDP who complained that Ogewu was wrongly declared the winner of the election using only the results from Oju LGA before the result from Obi which had about 59,000 registered voters was announced. At the Tribunal, Samson Okwu proved that the valid votes cast in the election showed that Ogweu scored 12,562 in Oju and 874 in Obi (13,436) while he the petitioner (Samson Okwu) scored 6,637 in Oju and 7,543 in Obi (14,180). The Tribunal then nullified the election of Ogewu and declared Okwu the winner of the election. [3] Ogewu's appeal at the Appeal Court retain his seat failed. [4] [5]

In 2023, both men ran against each other for the same seat. This time Ogewu ran on the ticket of the APC following his resignation from APGA while Okwu remained on the ticket of the PDP. Ogewu scored 26,450 defeating his opponent Samson Okwu the incumbent member of the House of Reps who polled 12,506 votes. [1] [6]

Mr Mbah polled 160,895 votes to defeat his closest challenger, the Labour Party (Nigeria) candidate, Chijioke Edeoga, who scored 157,552 votes. The candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Frank Nweke Jr, garnered 17,983 votes to come a distant third, while the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Uche Nnaji, placed fourth, with 14,575 votes. The election was contested in the Tribunal by Chijoike Edeoga but the tribunal eventually upheld the victory of Peter Mbah.

The 2019 Nigerian Senate election in Ekiti State held on February 23, 2019, to elect members of the Nigerian Senate to represent Ekiti State. Michael Opeyemi Bamidele representing Ekiti Central, Adetumbi Olubunmi representing Ekiti North and Adebayo Clement Adeyeye representing Ekiti South all won on the platform of All Progressives Congress; however, Adeyeye's win was later overturned, and the seat awarded to PDP incumbent Abiodun Olujimi.

Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko representing Sokoto North, Shehu Abubakar Tambuwal representing Sokoto South and Abdullahi Ibrahim Gobir representing Sokoto East all won on the platform of All Progressives Congress. But the Court of Appeal Sokoto Division on 30 October 2019 sacked Shehu Abubakar Tambuwal representing Sokoto South on the platform of All Progressives Congress. Ibrahim Abdullahi Danbaba on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party replaced the sacked senator.

Additionally, there will also be elections on the same day for the Senate and the House of Representatives. On 11 March, the election for Governor of Abia State will be held alongside elections to the state House of Assembly. Local government elections are scheduled for 28 April.

Samson Okwu is a Nigerian politician and member of the Federal House of Representatives for Oju/Obi Federal Constituency in the 7th to 9th National Assembly. A member of the People's Democratic Party, PDP, he failed re-election to the house in the 2023 elections after being defeated by his long-standing opponent, David Ogewu of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Maureen Chinwe Gwacham is a Nigerian businesswoman and politician elected to the 10th National Assembly from Oyi/ Ayamelum Federal Constituency of Anambra State on the ticket of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA. Gwacham polled 15,299 to defeat the candidate of Young Progressive Party, YPP Charles Uchenna Okafor who scored 13,332 votes People's Democratic Party, PDP candidate and former member of the House of Representatives received only 6,912 votes. The election of Gwacham is being challenged by the candidates o f the YPP, PDP and Labour Party at the election petitions tribunal.
