David Qajaakuttuk Qamaniq is a Canadian politician who was elected to represent the district of Tununiq in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in a by-election on September 16,2019. [1] Prior to his election to the legislature,he was a mayor of Pond Inlet; [2] he ran in the same district in a 2011 by-election,the 2013 Nunavut general election and the 2017 Nunavut general election,losing each time to Joe Enook,and was elected in the by-election following Enook's death in office.
He was a stage actor in his youth,who toured with the Tunooniq Theatre company to perform in Inuit stage plays. [3] He was most noted for his performance in David Holman's 1993 play Whale, [4] for which he received a Dora Mavor Moore Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male in a Principal Role –Play (Large Theatre). [5]
Qamaniq filed a wrongful death suit against the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in April 2019, [6] following the possibly racially-motivated shooting death of his son Kunuk in 2017. [7] He did not base his electoral campaign on the lawsuit,however,instead highlighting basic economic and community improvement proposals such as the construction of a new airstrip to serve the community,and the need for infrastructure facilities such as an indoor swimming pool,a playground,and a community hall. Igloolik is an Inuit hamlet in Foxe Basin,Qikiqtaaluk Region in Nunavut,northern Canada. Because its location on Igloolik Island is close to Melville Peninsula,it is often mistakenly thought to be on the peninsula. The name "Igloolik" means "there is a house here". It derives from iglu meaning house or building,and refers to the sod houses that were originally in the area,not to snow igloos. In Inuktitut the residents are called Iglulingmiut.
Pond Inlet is a small,predominantly Inuit community in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut,Canada,located on northern Baffin Island. To the Inuit the name of the place "is and always has been Mittimatalik." The Scottish explorer Sir John Ross had named an arm of the sea that separates Bylot Island from Baffin Island as Pond's Bay,and the hamlet now shares that name. On 29 August 1921,the Hudson's Bay Company opened its trading post near the Inuit camp and named it Pond Inlet,marking the expansion of its trading empire into the High Arctic.

Its name is derived from the fossilized coral that can be found around the waters of the community which is situated at the head of South Bay. The name of the settlement in Inuktitut is Salliq,sometimes used to refer to all of Southampton Island. The plural Salliit,means large flat island(s) in front of the mainland.

Levinia Nuqaalaq Brown is a Canadian Inuk politician who served as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the electoral district of Rankin Inlet South/Whale Cove in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut from 2004 to 2008. She was elected as a MLA on February 16,2004,and further elected by other MLAs to serve on the Executive Council of Nunavut. Premier Paul Okalik named her as the Deputy Premier on March 9,2004. She was subsequently chosen as the second premier of Nunavut,under the territory's consensus government system,on November 14,2008. Aariak was the fifth woman to serve as a premier in Canada.
Joe Enook was a Canadian politician who was elected to represent the district of Tununiq in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in a by-election on September 12,2011. He was re-elected in 2013 and 2017. In 2017,he was acclaimed as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut,the office he held until his death in March 2019. During his tenure as a Member of the Legislative Assembly and as its Speaker,he rarely addressed the legislature in English,as he preferred to promote the use of Inuktitut.

The fifth general election held since the creation of the territory in 1999,it was the first election held under Nunavut's new fixed election dates law,which requires elections to be held no more than four years after the prior election.
