David S. Shapira is an American businessman. He is Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and President of Giant Eagle, Inc. [1] He joined the company in 1971 and has been President and CEO since 1980. [2] Until 2009, he was the chairman of Carnegie Mellon University's Board of Trustees. [2]

In 1982, he co-founded Phar-Mor with Michael I. Monus. [3]

In 2012, his daughter Laura Shapira Karet took over as CEO for private company Giant Eagle, Inc., which was removed from the company by its Board of Directors in late March 2023.

He was also a member of the board of Directors of Equitable Resources, Inc. (NYSE: EQT), a Pennsylvania natural gas and oil company with emphasis on the Appalachian area. [4]

He received his undergraduate degree from Oberlin College in 1963 and an MA in Economics from Stanford University. [4]

Phar-Mor was a United States chain of discount drug stores, based in Youngstown, Ohio, and founded by Michael "Mickey" Monus and David Shapira in 1982. Some of its stores used the names Pharmhouse and Rx Place. Low prices were advertised to bring in a large volume of sales with the slogans "Phar-Mor power buying gives you Phar-Mor buying power" and "Phar-Mor For Less." Another common slogan in their TV commercials was "Power buying saves: Save at Phar-Mor."

Michael I. "Mickey" Monus is the former president of Phar-Mor, Inc., founder of the World Basketball League and was an original owner of the Colorado Rockies, a Major League Baseball expansion team. Phar-Mor was a deep-discount drug and grocery retail chain that established a strong national presence before declaring bankruptcy in the early 1990s. Accused of perpetrating an embezzlement scheme behind one of the largest corporate frauds in US history, Monus was fired from the company and faced criminal charges. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, which is where Phar-Mor was headquartered.
