David Smith was the chief executive of the Australian Rugby League Commission which manages the National Rugby League (NRL). He previously worked in the banking sector in the United Kingdom and Australia. [1]
Smith has an engineering background. He began his banking career with Morgan Grenfell & Co in 1987. [2] After this position, he held a number of senior management positions in Deutsche Bank, UBS and Lloyds International Pty Ltd.
From September 2005 to March 2009, Smith was Head of Bank of Scotland Treasury Australia (later part of Lloyds International Pty Ltd. [2] He was Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Lloyds International Pty Ltd. (formerly known as HBOS Australia Pty Ltd), a subsidiary of Lloyds Banking Group from March 2009 to November 2012. [2] As CEO, Smith had responsibility for 10 countries, 1500 staff and managing assets of $A50 billion. [1]
He was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Rugby League Commission in November 2012 and took up the appointment on 1 February 2013, and will leave the post on 30 November 2015. [3] He replaced David Gallop. [1] In making the appointment, ARLC Chairman John Grant stated "This is a person who knows business, who knows how to lead, who loves sport, who is culturally suited to our game and who has a very strong sense of community." [1] It was noted that he did not have a background in rugby league but had played rugby union in Wales. Before his tenure ended, he secured a record free-to-air broadcast deal with the Nine Network. [4] After his resignation, John Grant was appointed acting CEO. [5]
The Wests Tigers are an Australian professional rugby league football team, based in the Inner West and South West Sydney. They have competed in the National Rugby League since being formed at the end of the 1999 NRL season as a joint-venture club between the Balmain Tigers and the Western Suburbs Magpies. The Wests Tigers started playing in the 2000 NRL season and they won their maiden premiership in 2005. It is one of only two clubs that has never lost a Grand Final in which it has participated. The club also won the final edition of the World Sevens in 2004.
The Melbourne Storm are a rugby league club based in Melbourne, Victoria in Australia that participates in the National Rugby League (NRL). The first fully professional rugby league team based in the state, the Storm entered the competition in 1998. The Storm were originally a Super League initiative, created in 1997 during the Super League war, however, following the Super League collapse, the team became a part of the newly formed, united competition. David Gallop is an Australian sports administrator, lawyer and served as the chief executive of the Football Federation Australia until December 2019. He previously served as the chief executive officer of the National Rugby League between February 2002 and June 2012. He was also the Secretary of the Rugby League International Federation from its inception in 1998 up until his resignation on 5 June 2012.
John Lang is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, and coached in the 1980s through to the 2010s. A Queensland State of Origin and Australian international representative hooker, he played his club football in Brisbane with the Eastern Suburbs Tigers and in Sydney with the Eastern Suburbs Roosters. After playing, Lang became a first-grade coach in Brisbane with Easts, then in Sydney with the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, Penrith Panthers and South Sydney Rabbitohs. Lang also coached the Australian Super League test team in 1997.
