Education

Provost earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Alma College and his MBA from Eastern Michigan University, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Banking. [1] David also received two honorary doctorates, a Doctor of Letters from Alma College [2] and a Doctor of Business from Eastern Michigan University. [3] He is married with two children. [1] [4]

Career

David T. Provost is the Chairman of TCF Bank.

Prior to joining the bank in 2017, Provost served as President and CEO of Talmer Bancorp, and chairman, and CEO of Talmer Bank and Trust, a Michigan based community bank. [1] [5] [6] [7]

Prior to joining Talmer Bank and Trust (formerly First Michigan Bank) in 2008, Provost served as chairman and CEO of The PrivateBank (formerly The Bank of Bloomfield Hills), which he co-founded in 1989. [5] [8] He also served at Manufacturers National Bank of Detroit, now known as Comerica Bank, for thirteen years. [1]

David Provost serves on the board of directors and as Chairman of the Audit Committee for Plastipak Packaging, Inc., [9] located in Plymouth, Michigan. As an active member of the community, he serves on the board of directors for The RESTORE Foundation, [10] the Community Foundation of Southeastern Michigan, [11] the Detroit Economic Club, [12] Eastern Michigan University College of Business, [3] the Partners in Torah Advisory Board, [1] the Presbyterian Village Advisory Board, [1] and is a Past chairman of the board of Trustees of Alma College. [13]

David T Provost was named one of Crain's Detroit Business 2010 Newsmakers of the Year. [14] In 2006 and 2015 he was awarded the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Central Great Lakes Financial Services division. [1] [15] He also received the 2007 Yeshiva Beth Yehudah Outstanding Leadership Award, [13] and is a recipient of Crain's Detroit Business "40 Under 40" business leaders award. [1]

As of December 31, 2013, TCF had $18.4 billion in total assets and nearly 430 branches in Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Colorado, Wisconsin, Indiana, Arizona, and South Dakota, providing retail and commercial banking services. TCF, through its subsidiaries, also conducted commercial leasing and equipment finance business in all 50 states, commercial inventory finance business in the United States and Canada, and indirect auto finance business in 45 states.

As of April 13, 2013, it became a subsidiary of the FirstMerit Corporation. The merger finalized on June 13, 2013. FirstMerit merged with Huntington Bancshares in 2016.

TCF Financial Corporation was a bank holding company based in Detroit, Michigan. The current incarnation of the company was formed by a 2019 merger between the former TCF, which was established in 1923 in Wayzata, Minnesota, and the Michigan-based Chemical Financial Corporation. In December 2020, TCF announced a merger with Huntington Bancshares. It was announced on May 26, 2021, that TCF Bank will be required by the Department of Justice to sell off 13 branches in Michigan. These branches were purchased by Horizon Bank at the end of the third quarter. The final approval has been given for the merger and the merger was complete on June 9, 2021. The combined bank has $175 billion in assets.
