David Tidboald

David Tidboald (30 September 1926, Plymouth - 2 July 2018, Cape Town) was a British-born South African conductor.

Career

Born in Plymouth, Tidboald was conscripted at the age of 18 but saw no action. He was sent to Berlin at the end of the Second World War on his request where he was mentored by Leopold Ludwig and Wilhelm Furtwängler. [1] He first visited South Africa to accompany British ballerina Beryl Grey before later settling in Cape Town. He first conducted the Cape Town Municipal Orchestra (later Cape Town Symphony Orchestra) in November 1957, becoming its orchestral director from 1960 until 1965.

On the formation of the Cape Performing Arts Board in 1970, Tidboald founded the orchestra for both ballet and opera performances. In 1983 he was asked to establish the Natal Philharmonic Orchestra. His legacy includes Cape Town's annual youth music festival, founded in 1975, and Durban's Youth Concerto Festival Concert, founded in 1985. [2]

David Earl (composer)

David Earl is a South African composer and pianist. He was educated at Rondebosch Boys' High School. He made his professional debut at the age of sixteen when he broadcast Bach, Chopin and Chabrier on the SABC. In 1968, he performed Felix Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No 1 with the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra. In 1971, he moved to London where he studied at Trinity College of Music. He studied under Jacob Kaletsky and Richard Arnell. After a live début broadcast recital on BBC Radio 3 in 1974, his first recital at Wigmore Hall was reported as "stylish and powerful" by The Times. In 1975, he was selected as one of the Young Musicians of the Year by the Greater London Arts Association. He also won first prize in the 1976 SABC Piano Competition. He was described by The Daily Telegraph as having "remarkable gifts of style, technical mastery and artistry". He made his début as a composer in the 1977 when he premiered his own Piano Suite No 1 Mosaics at Wigmore Hall. His concerto repertoire includes the Viennese classics, many from the nineteenth century, and amongst those from the 20th, the piano concertos of Arthur Bliss and John Joubert, both of which he studied with the composers. Conductors he has appeared with include Hugo Rignold, Maurice Handford, Piero Gamba and Christian Badea.

South African National Youth Orchestra Foundation

The South African National Youth Orchestra Foundation is a non-profit organisation in the music education and development sector. The Foundation supports the training and development of South Africa's young musicians through national courses, national and international tours and workshops, and networks nationally and internationally. It also assists regional youth orchestra and music education programmes countrywide. It organises youth orchestra courses, where the South African National Youth Orchestras are formed. This has included the South African National Youth Orchestra, South African National Concert Orchestra, the South African National Wind Orchestra, the South African National Youth Baroque Orchestra, South African National Youth Brass and the South African National Youth String Orchestra. Members of these orchestras are under the age of 25.
