David Williams was born on October 3, 1965. [1] He is a native of Minnesota. [2] Williams won the Minnesota State Junior and Senior Championships in Judo numerous times before the age of 17. He attended and Wrestled at Iowa State University and transferred to San Jose State University in 1985, [2] where he earned a degree in International Business, minoring in French and Japanese. After completion of his first degree he moved to Tokai University in Kanegawa, Japan, where he trained on and off until the Olympic Trials in '96. [2] Later he completed a Masters in Intercultural Communications in 2003. [2] He was a national and international competitor in Judo. [3] His last known rank is Ryokudan. His most recent win was at the US National Championships in Judo, 1996. [3] Though he attempted to join the Olympic Team for the United States, he earned the alternate spot to Jimmy Pedro when he placed second in the 71 kg division. [4] He was selected as the Olympic Alternate. [5] He has had a 23-year competitive career. [2] He also has worked as a Physical Education Professor at San Jose State University, where he just completed his 20th year of service to the California State University system. [6] In 2015, he became the first Black IJF-A Referee in USA Judo history. [7]

Rene Capo was a judoka from the United States who competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics and the 1996 Summer Olympics. Capo immigrated to the United States from Cuba as a young boy. Though he won several judo championships in high school, Capo took a four-year break from the sport to attend the University of Minnesota. After college, Capo went on to qualify for two United States Olympics teams, could not compete as an alternate in another due to a back injury, and narrowly missed making the 2008 team. In 2008, Capo was diagnosed with lung cancer, which caused his death the following year.

David Matsumoto is an author, psychologist and judoka. His areas of expertise include culture, emotion, facial expressions, nonverbal behavior and microexpressions. He has published over 400 articles, manuscripts, book chapters and books on these subjects. Matsumoto is a professor at San Francisco State University and also the director of Humintell - a company that provides "unique training in the fields of facial expression of emotion, nonverbal behavior, detecting deception and cultural adaptation." In addition, he is an 8th degree black belt in judo and the founder and program advisor of the East Bay Judo Institute in El Cerrito, California. He was most recently inducted into the 2021 United States Judo Federation (USJF) Hall of Fame which acknowledges outstanding judoka who have made significant contributions to the sport of judo.

Alida Yvette Gray is an American judoka and mixed martial artist. She was born in North Hollywood, California, United States, and is of Russian, Jewish, and Mexican background. She graduated from Cal. State University of San Bernardino.

Bryan Leininger is a former US National Champion in judo. He competed in the Olympic festival as a preliminary to the Olympic trials in 1991.He typically competed in the over 209lbs division.

James "Brewster" Thompson is a former judoka competitor. James was an Olympic alternate for the US team in 1984.

Aaron Cohen is an American former judoka. He was a 5-time US national champion, and earned a silver medal in the 2008 US Olympic trials. He earned a bronze medal at the 2009 Maccabiah Games in Israel.

George Uchida was a judoka, wrestler, author, and coach. Uchida was the brother of San Jose Judo Coach Yosh Uchida. Uchida and other family members were sent to the Poston internment camp during World War II, following the signing of Executive Order 9066. He later served in the US Army in the field of military intelligence. He got key intelligence about Russian involvement in the Korean War. Upon his return he enrolled in San Jose State University majoring in physical education.
