Jonathan Michael Richman is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. In 1970, he founded the Modern Lovers, an influential proto-punk band. Since the mid-1970s, Richman has worked either solo or with low-key acoustic and electric backing. He now plays only acoustic to protect his hearing. He is known for his wide-eyed, unaffected, and childlike outlook, and music that, while rooted in rock and roll, is influenced by music from around the world.

The most well-known version is that recorded by US-American duo The Carpenters for their second studio album Close to You (1970) and produced by Jack Daugherty. It also reached the top of the Canadian and Australian charts, and peaked at number six on the charts of both the UK and Ireland. "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves" is a 1985 song recorded by the British pop duo Eurythmics and American singer Aretha Franklin. A modern feminist anthem, it was written by Eurythmics members Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart and featured on both Eurythmics' Be Yourself Tonight (1985) and Franklin's Who's Zoomin' Who? (1985) albums. The duo originally intended to perform with Tina Turner, who was unavailable at the time and so they approached Franklin instead. The single featured backing vocals from George Michael, who called Austin his best friend in the documentary film, A Different Story. "Love While You Can" is another collaboration by the duo, released only in Japan, also with uncredited vocals by Michael.

They finished as runners-up in the sixth series of Britain's Got Talent in 2012, being beaten by dancing dog act Ashleigh and Pudsey. At the time, they were aged 17 and 16 respectively. Despite not winning, the young duo were offered a £1 million record deal by Simon Cowell on his record label Syco. They released two albums, Together in 2012 and Perhaps Love in 2013. In February 2014, the duo decided to split and embark on solo careers.
