It is primarily described as populist of the syncretic kind, due to its members' long-time insistence that it has no place in the left–right political spectrum. The party has been a proponent of green politics and direct democracy, and, since the party's crescent involvement in the centre-left coalition, progressivism, social democracy and left-wing populism.
The 2018 Italian general election was held on 4 March 2018 after the Italian Parliament was dissolved by President Sergio Mattarella on 28 December 2017. Voters were electing the 630 members of the Chamber of Deputies and the 315 elective members of the Senate of the Republic for the 18th legislature of the Italian Republic since 1948. The election took place concurrently with the Lombard and Lazio regional elections. No party or coalition gained an absolute majority in the parliament, even though the centre-right coalition won a plurality of seats as a coalition, and the Five Star Movement (M5S) won a plurality of seats as an individual party.
Gianroberto Casaleggio was an Italian entrepreneur and political activist. He was co-founder and chairman of Casaleggio Associati srl, an internet and publishing company that advises on network strategies. He was editor of Beppe Grillo's blog, and together they founded the Five Star Movement, of which Casaleggio was sometimes called the "guru".
Alessandro Di Battista is an Italian politician, activist and writer, deputy of the XVII Legislature of the Italian Republic. He was part of the Five Stars Movement from 2009 to 2021. He left the movement in February 2021 because he was against the formation of the Draghi government.

Federico Pizzarotti is an Italian politician who served as mayor of Parma from 2012 to 2022. He was the first M5S mayor in a provincial capital of Italy, after being elected on 21 May 2012 with 60.22% of votes in a runoff election. He was re-elected with 57.87% of the votes.

Conte easily won the election with 92.8% of votes.

Initially elected as a representative of the 5 Star Movement, she later joined the Together for the Future party in 2022 following Luigi Di Maio's split.
