De Tretten (The Group of Thirteen), also De Tretten Kunstnere (The Thirteen Artists), was a grouping of young Danish artists who arranged their own exhibitions in Copenhagen from 1909 to 1912 in order to display works which would not have been accepted for exhibition by the then rather traditional Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

Background

Based on the French model of the Salon des Refusés, De Tretten was founded on the initiative of Olaf Rude (who exhibited there in 1909 and 1910) and the critic Jens Pedersen. Rude had managed to obtain financial guarantees for the enterprise from those who had recently established themselves in the seaside resort of Marielyst on Falster which had been promoted as an artists colony along the lines of Skagen. [1] Several, including Rude himself, had studied at the Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler under Kristian Zahrtmann who had broken away from the Academy into the developing trends of Naturalism and Realism. [2] Paintings exhibited at De Tretten were often in line with movements of the times such as Futurism and Post-Impressionism.

De Tretten was not the only attempt to exhibit outside the Academy. Den Frie Udstilling (The Free Exhibition) was established in 1891 and continues to exhibit today. Grønningen, founded in 1915, now exhibits in the Charlottenborg Exhibition Hall. [16] [17]

Den Frie Udstilling Danish artists association

Den Frie Udstilling is a Danish artists' association, founded in 1891 by artists in protest against the admission requirements for the Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Modeled on the Salon des Refusés, it is Denmark's oldest association of artists. Now located on Copenhagen's Oslo Plads next to Østerport Station, it works as an arts centre, continuing to exhibit works created and selected by contemporary artists rather than those chosen by cultural authorities.

Harald Slott-Møller

Harald Slott-Møller was a Danish painter and ceramist. Together with his wife, the painter Agnes Slott-Møller, he was a founding member of Den Frie Udstilling.

Ville Jais Nielsen Danish painter and sculptor (1886–1949)

Vilhelmine "Ville" Jais Nielsen was a Danish painter and sculptor. She is remembered for the many portraits of women she painted while in Sweden during the Second World War, marked by strong brushstrokes and sensitive lighting effects. Her husband was the artist Jais Nielsen.

Folmer Bonnén was a Danish painter and journalist. He was one of the founding members of the grouping of modern artists known as De Tretten where, in 1909, he exhibited a large colourful painting Ungdom i aftensol, causing quite a stir. Kristian Zahrtmann immediately supported the daring work, rewarding Bonnén with a stipendium. His work was part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1924 Summer Olympics.

Harald Nikolaj Kampmann Henriksen (1883–1960) was a Danish painter whose landscapes combine a rather traditional style with the new trends in French painting.

Axel Peder Jensen was a Danish painter who is remembered above all for his landscapes which added new subjects and stronger colouring to earlier works by the Funen Painters.

Aksel Jørgensen ( was a Danish painter and wood engraver. He is also remembered for his years as a professor at the Royal Danish Academy where he instructed many Danish illustrators.

Johannes Wilhjelm Danish painter

Johannes Martin Fasting Wilhjelm was a Danish painter. Strongly influenced by Kristian Zahrtmann, he painted bright, colourful landscapes while travelling in Italy. His works also include religious paintings and portraits. He frequently visited the artists' colony of Skagen in the north of Denmark where he painted scenes of the dunes and beaches.

Svend Johansen was a Danish painter, scenographer and illustrator.

Jette Thyssen Danish textile artist, painter and lithographer

Jette Thyssen is a Danish textile artist, painter and lithographer who produces brightly coloured, geometrically patterned compositions. She has decorated many buildings, including the Montmartre Jazz Club in Copenhagen for its opening in 1959 and the town hall in Frederikssund with a tapestry in 1987. Since the early 1970s, she has exhibited widely in Denmark and abroad.

Sigrid Helga Lütken (1915–2008) was a Danish sculptor who is remembered for her openly displayed works throughout Denmark. Working in a wide variety of materials, she focused on plants, animals and people, all depicted in strong abstract forms. Her works form part of the permanent exhibitions of the National Museum of Denmark and can be seen in the Museum of Aabenraa and in Hjørring's Sculpture Park. Some of her more recent creations decorate the garden of the Carlsberg Foundation in Copenhagen.
