Dean Mosher is an American artist, author, and historian from Fairhope, Alabama. He has paintings in permanent collections in several museums including the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the United States Coast Guard Academy, United States Naval Academy, and the University of Virginia.

Biography

Dean Mosher served five years (2002–2007) as Historian General of the Naval Order of the United States [1] [2] where he received the Commander General's medal in 2006 for organizing and saving the records of the organization. [3] He lectures around the country on historical subjects, including the Wright Brothers, John Paul Jones, Oliver Hazard Perry (which he corrected historical records of), [4] Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, Theodore Roosevelt, and D-Day. [5] He lives in his own hand-built castle in Fairhope with his wife Pagan Sheldon Mosher. They have two children, Megrez and Cleveland. [6]

Mosher’s most notable painting is Wilbur Wright Greets Lady Liberty. [7] The painting depicts the only accurate portrayal of Wilbur Wright’s flight around the Statue of Liberty, as he explains in his article written for the Smithsonian. [8] Amanda Wright-Lane, great grandniece of the Wright Brothers, and Dean Mosher donated the painting to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in July and it went on permanent exhibit in the Early Flight gallery on August 1, 2013. [7] Another noteworthy painting, Close Action, resides at War of 1812 Museum in Plattsburgh, New York. [9]

Among his most famous works are his view of the interior of the Pantheon, and his vedute—paintings of picture galleries containing views of Rome. Most of his works, especially those of ruins, have a fanciful and unreal embellishment characteristic of capriccio themes. In this they resemble the capricci of Marco Ricci. Panini also painted portraits, including one of Pope Benedict XIV.

Erie Maritime Museum is a maritime museum located on Presque Isle Bay which rests on the waterfront in downtown Erie, Pennsylvania. It is managed by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC). When it opened its doors on May 21, 1998, it became the first new Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission-affiliated museum in twenty years. Alongside its extensive indoor exhibits, it serves as the homeport for the US Brig Niagara, a modern recreation of the 1813-US Brig Niagara which served as Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's relief flagship during the Battle of Lake Erie. While the museum focuses on the War of 1812 in the "frontier", it is designed to celebrate Erie's rich maritime heritage.

Joseph Stanley Kozlowski (1912–1992), American portrait and watercolor artist, was born in Frankfort, New York. The family later owned a farm in Clinton, New York and Kozlowski attended Clinton High School. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1936 with a BFA degree. In 1938 he was appointed chief artist and photographer with the Poole-Crockett archaeological expedition to study the Mayan ruins in the Yucatán Peninsula undertaken by Syracuse University. He returned to Yucatán in 1940 for a period of 8 months, using his paintings as barter for food and accommodations.

Thomas Macdonough, Jr. was an early-19th-century Irish-American naval officer noted for his roles in the first Barbary War and the War of 1812. He was the son of a revolutionary officer, Thomas Macdonough, Sr. who lived near Middletown, Delaware. He was the sixth child from a family of ten siblings and was raised in the countryside. He entered naval life at an early age, receiving a midshipman's commission at the age of sixteen. Serving with Stephen Decatur at Tripoli, he was a member of "Preble's Boys", a select group of U.S. naval officers who served under the command of Commodore Preble during the First Barbary War. Macdonough achieved fame during the War of 1812, commanding the American naval forces that defeated the British navy at the Battle of Lake Champlain, part of the larger Battle of Plattsburgh, which helped lead to an end to that war.

Wharton Esherick was an American sculptor who worked primarily in wood, especially applying the principles of sculpture to common utilitarian objects. Esherick was recognized in his lifetime by his peers as the “dean of American craftsmen” for his leadership in developing nontraditional designs and for encouraging and inspiring artists and artisans by example. <i>The Battle of the Kearsarge and the Alabama</i>

The Battle of the Kearsarge and the Alabama is an 1864 oil painting by Édouard Manet. The painting commemorates the Battle of Cherbourg of 1864, a naval engagement of the American Civil War between the Union cruiser USS Kearsarge and the Confederate raider CSS Alabama. Many spectators were able to see the battle from the coast of France and saw the USS Kearsarge sink the CSS Alabama. Not having witnessed the battle himself, Manet relied on press descriptions of the battle to document his work. Within one month of this battle, Manet had already completed this painting and got it on display in the print shop of Alfred Cadart in Paris.

<i>The Kearsarge at Boulogne</i>

The Kearsarge at Boulogne is an oil-on-canvas painting by Édouard Manet completed in 1864. It depicts the Union sloop-of-war USS Kearsarge anchored at the French resort of Boulogne-sur-Mer.

Thomas Breese was an American naval officer. Best known for his service under Oliver Hazard Perry during the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie, he served in the United States Navy for another 33 years, including as a paymaster for over two decades.
