Debra D. (Debbie) Chapman is a Canadian politician and university professor. She has been serving on Kitchener City Council since 2018. [1] Chapman is also the Ontario New Democratic Party Kitchener Centre candidate for the 2023 by-election. [2] [3]

Career

Dr. Chapman completed her undergraduate degree at Wilfrid Laurier University, followed by a Masters of Arts at York University and a PhD in political science at The University of Western Ontario. She has been teaching at Wilfrid Laurier in the department of political science since 2009. [1] [4]

Political Career

In the 2010 Waterloo Region municipal election, Chapman lost the election by one vote. A judge reserved the decision of the recount. [5] [6]

In the 2018 Waterloo Region municipal election, Dr. Chapman won her seat in Ward 9 in Kitchener with over 50% of the vote. [7] In the following 2022 municipal election, Dr. Chapman expanded her vote share to almost 60% of the vote. [8]

Dr. Chapman also advocates for various communities like BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. She has supported legislation on bans for conversion therapy. [10] Chapman has been critical of the province's Bill 23 [11] and often raises concerns about the lack of affordable units. [12]

On June 7, 2023, Marit Stiles announced Dr. Chapman's nomination to run under the NDP banner in the provincial by-election, following Laura Mae Lindo stepping down from her seat.
