The Decatur City Schools is a school system located in the city of Decatur, Alabama, and is home to seven of Alabama's International Baccalaureate schools. [1] The school system is also the second largest employer in Decatur.

Overview

Decatur's spending per student is one of the highest in the state, and higher than many places in the nation. [2]

The Decatur City School District was the first in North Alabama to offer the International Baccalaureate Programme. The system contains two IB Diploma Programme schools in the high schools, and two IB Primary Years Programme schools in the two magnet schools and three IB Middle Years Programme schools in the three middle schools. The Primary Years accredited schools are the first, and currently only, in Alabama. The Middle Years accredited schools are also the first and currently only in Alabama.[ citation needed ]

It is an accredited International Baccalaureate (IB) World School offering the Diploma (IBDP) and Middle Years Program (MYP) to students wishing to pursue advanced academic study in mathematics, science, English, Spanish, French, history, and the arts. Riverstone International School is a private, independent school for preschool through high school students in Boise, Idaho that offers day and boarding programs. Riverstone was the first International Baccalaureate World School in Idaho and is one of a small number of schools in the United States to offer all three IB programs, the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the Diploma Programme (DP). John W. Paisley Magnet School is a Middle school/High school located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It is home to the International Baccalaureate Middle Years program for students in grades six through ten. Paisley is a part of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools system. In 2007, Paisley was recognized as a Magnet School of excellence; one of five in North Carolina and only fifty in the United States. Paisley has been an accredited IB/MYP school since 2004. Marion Pittman-Couch was principal during Paisley's process to become recognized by the IBO and retired in 2007. Paisley Magnet School is currently searching for a new principal. Paisley houses more than 800 students from Forsyth County and the region. Students must complete a magnet school application for admission to Paisley if they are not a resident in Paisley's home school zone. The eleventh and twelfth grade IB Diploma Programme is housed at Parkland High School. The IB Primary Years Programme begins at Speas Elementary School for grades K–5.
