Dr. Deepika Udagama is a Sri Lankan professor, academic administrator, human rights activist and also served as the Head of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka. She has served as the head of the Department of Law and at the University of Peradeniya. [1] She has specialised on the field of international Human Rights law. She served as Sri Lanka's alternate member to the United Nations (UN) Sub-Commission on the promotion and protection of Human Rights, and the UN Sub-Commission's Co-Special Reporter on Globalisation and its impact on Human Rights. Dr. Udagama was the founding director of the Centre for the Study of Human Rights at the Faculty of Law. She serves as the Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Foundation's Commission on Democracy and Human Rights. She holds and LLB and LLM (University of Colombo) and a JSD (Calif.). [2]

On 3 August 2020, she tendered her official resignation from the position of the head of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka. [3] [4]

Mangala Samaraweera Sri Lankan politician

Mangala Pinsiri Samaraweera, better known as Mangala Samaraweera, is a Sri Lankan politician. Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed her to the position in April 2006. She was nominated to the Constitutional Council as a civil representative on 10 September 2015. In 2017, after atrocities against the Rohingya people, she was appointed a Member of the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on Myanmar.

Sri Lanka Police

The Sri Lanka Police is the civilian national police force of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The police force is responsible for enforcing criminal and traffic law, enhancing public safety, maintaining order and keeping the peace throughout Sri Lanka. The police force consists of 43 Territorial Divisions, 67 Functional Divisions, 432 Police Stations with more than 84,000 people. The professional head of the police is the Inspector General of Police who reports to the Minister of Law and Order as well as the National Police Commission. The current Inspector General of Police is C.D. Wickramaratna.

The Sri Lankan High Commissioner to the United Kingdom is the Sri Lankan envoy to United Kingdom. Countries belonging to the Commonwealth of Nations typically exchange High Commissioners, rather than Ambassadors. Though there are a few technical differences, they are in practice one and the same office. The Sri Lankan High Commissioner to the United Kingdom is concurrently accredited as the Ambassador to the Republic of Ireland. The current post of High Commissioner is occupied by Manisha Gunasekara.

In addition, she is currently an advisor to the President of Sri Lanka in Banking and a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (2004–2009). She has also served as a member of the Insurance Board of Sri Lanka and a member of Securities and Exchange Commission.

Deshamanya Weligamage Don Lakshman popularly known as Professor W. D. Lakshman is a Sri Lankan economist, professor, lecturer, academic and author who is also the current Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and current chairman of the Monetary Board of the CBSL. He is regarded as one of the prominent economists of the country mainly well known for his immense contributions to policy related activities and for being specialised in the field of Economics.

The Constitutional Council (CC) is a 10-member constitutional authority in Sri Lanka tasked with maintaining independent commissions and monitoring its affairs. The Constitutional Council is aimed at depoliticizing the public service.

Jayanthi Kuru-Utumpala Sri Lankan mountaineer and womens rights activist

Jayanthi Kuru-Utumpala is a Sri Lankan adventurer, professional rock climber, motivational speaker, and LGBT and women's rights activist. She is the first person from Sri Lanka to summit Mount Everest which she achieved on 21 May 2016. Kuru-Utumpala is an advocate for women's rights in Sri Lanka and has spent most of her adult life researching gender studies and women's rights. She formed a collaboration with fellow mountaineer Johann Peries for several expeditions.

Deshabandu Jezima Ismail is a Sri Lankan educator, broadcaster and social activist who has also served as an advocate for human rights. She has held several higher positions in fields such as education, human rights and broadcasting. She has also worked in several international organisations on human rights. She is the founder of the Muslim Women's Research and Action Forum (MWRAF), and the President of the Sri Lanka Muslim Women's Conference (SLMWC). Jezima has notably addressed some of the nation's most critical issues including development of youth, women's rights, peace and democracy. In 1989, she was awarded the title of Deshabandu by the Sri Lankan government, which is the third highest national honour in Sri Lanka. Jezima Ismail is considered as one of inspirational and greatest women among the Islamic community for her immense services towards the society.

Sexual minorities in Sri Lanka have been counted in recent times as consisting of as little as 0.035% of the population to as high as 19.6%. It is likely that there are around 1,100,000 according to current mapping conventions.

2019 Sri Lankan presidential election

Presidential elections were held in Sri Lanka on 16 November 2019. The incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena's term of office would have ended on 9 January 2020. This was the first Presidential election in Sri Lanka where no sitting president, prime minister or opposition leader was contesting for president. Gotabaya Rajapaksa won this election to Sajith Premadasa.

Marini De Livera Sri Lankan lawyer and social activist

Marini De Livera is a Sri Lankan lawyer and social activist who also served as former chairperson of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) in Sri Lanka. In 2019, she was awarded the International Women of Courage Award by the United States Department of State.

Ajantha Perera Sri Lankan social activist

Ajantha Wijesinghe Perera is a Sri Lankan academic, scientist, university lecturer, environmental activist and politician. She is known for her efforts to end the garbage crisis in Sri Lanka and is nicknamed as Garbage Queen. She founded the National Programme on Recycling of Solid Waste to solve the garbage crisis.

Deshamanya Vajira Chitrasena is a veteran Sri Lankan traditional dancer, choreographer and teacher. Vajira is regarded as Sri Lanka's first prima ballerina. She is the first Sri Lankan woman to practice the traditional Kandyan dance which was traditionally performed only by men. Vajira is credited for creating brand for female style of Kandyan dancing and set the tone for women to become ritual dancers. She was married to Chitrasena who was a well known legendary dancer and dance guru. On 26 January 2020, she along with late professor Indra Dassanayake was conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri award which is one of the highest Indian civilian awards coinciding with the 71st Republic Day of India.

Mohamed Uvais Mohamed Ali Sabry, PC, MP is a Sri Lankan lawyer and politician. He is the current Minister of Justice and Member of Parliament, appointed from the national list of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna. He served as the defense counsel of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, chief legal adviser and President of the Muslim Federation of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.

Lalanath de Silva

Dr. Lalanath de Silva is a Sri Lankan born environmental lawyer, serving as the first Head of the Independent Redress Mechanism of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) established as the main funding mechanism under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). He was appointed to this position by the 24 member Board of the GCF and is one of the four Board appointed officials of the Fund.

Bimshani Jasin Arachchi also spelt either as Bimshani Jasinarachchi or Bimshani Jayasinghe Arachchi is a Sri Lankan police officer. She was the Deputy Inspector General of Police up until she was pulled out of this position. She was confirmed in September 2020 after having served as the Superintendent of Police from 2017. Bimshani is notably regarded Sri Lanka's first and only female DIG.
