Samuel Dale Brownback is an American attorney, politician, diplomat, and member of the Republican Party was the United States Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom from 2018 to 2021. Brownback previously served as the Secretary of Agriculture of Kansas (1986–1993), as the U.S. representative for Kansas's 2nd congressional district (1995–1996), as a United States senator from Kansas (1996–2011) and the 46th governor of Kansas (2011–2018). He also ran for the Republican nomination for President in 2008.

Scott T. Rupp is a former Republican member of the Missouri Senate, representing the 2nd District from 2006 to 2014. Elected to the Missouri Senate in a special election in April 2006, Scott was re-elected in November 2006 to serve his first full term. He was re-elected in November 2010 to his second full term in the Missouri Senate. Previously, he was twice elected to represent the citizens of northwest St. Charles County in the Missouri House of Representatives and received more than 65 percent of the vote in 2002 and 2004. In 2014 Rupp could not run for re-election due to term limits. In April 2014 he retired early to take a position on the Missouri Public Service Commission.

Schmidt became the state attorney general in 2011, after he defeated incumbent Democrat Stephen Six in the November 2010 elections and joined other Republican states' attorneys general in suing to block many Obama administration policies. In 2020, after Republican President Donald Trump was defeated by Joe Biden but refused to acknowledge defeat, Schmidt joined a failed legal effort to overturn the election results.

He assumed the governorship when Sam Brownback resigned to become United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom. Colyer ran for a full term as governor in 2018, but narrowly lost the Republican primary to Kansas secretary of state Kris Kobach, who in turn lost the general election to Democratic nominee Laura Kelly.
