At UW, the Department is a model for interdisciplinary partnerships and works across campus with the Schools of Medicine, Public Health, Pharmacy, Nursing, Business, Law, Engineering; the College of Built Environments; the College of the Environment; and the Departments of Anthropology, Bioengineering, Communication, and Epidemiology.   [1]

Academic Programs

The UW Department of Global Health offers undergraduate classes and five graduate degrees.

Undergraduates at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, have options for both a Public Health – Global Health Major and a Global Health Minor. The Public Health – Global Health Major is administered in the School of Public Health Dean's Office, and the Global Health Minor is administered in the Department of Global Health. [3]

The University of Washington’s Department of Global Health Master of Public Health (MPH) program is one of the premier global health programs in the world. The MPH program typically spans two years, though students may complete the program in more or less time, depending on their individual circumstances [4] .

The Doctor of Global Health Leadership and Practice (DrGH) degree program is a unique practice-based doctoral program for mid-career professionals. This innovative degree addresses the growing need for advanced training in evidence-based practice and leadership skills in global health settings. The Doctor of Global Health Leadership and Practice can be completed in as little as three years. [5]

The University of Washington’s Departments of Global Health and Health Metrics Sciences offer a co-administered, interdisciplinary PhD program that is the first of its kind. Innovative curriculum based on faculty expertise in the areas of metrics and implementation science equip students with tools for addressing global health challenges. Students may choose between two degree programs with separate but complementary areas of emphasis. [6]

The Implementation Science PhD program, provides training on the systematic application of scientific approaches to ask and answer questions regarding evidence of intervention efficacy to implementation. This science addresses how interventions can be scaled-up with greater speed, fidelity, efficiency, quality, and coverage. [7]

The Pathobiology Graduate Program offers research and training programs leading to the Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science degrees. Coursework includes basic courses in pathobiology, with additional courses required in epidemiology and molecular biology. Students may also choose electives from other basic medical sciences, such as microbiology, biochemistry, pathology, and genetics. The Program places equal emphasis on research and training for both graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. [8]

Inaugural Chair

On September 8, 2006, the University of Washington announced King K. Holmes, MD, PhD, a world leader in AIDS and infectious disease research and training, to become the first chair of the University of Washington's new Department of Global Health. [9]
