The United States attorney general (AG) leads the United States Department of Justice, and is the chief lawyer of the federal government of the United States. The attorney general serves as the principal advisor to the president of the United States on all legal matters. The attorney general is a statutory member of the Cabinet of the United States.
The United States Department of Justice (DOJ), also known as the Justice Department, is a federal executive department of the United States government tasked with the enforcement of federal law and administration of justice in the United States. In the United States, a special counsel is a lawyer appointed to investigate, and potentially prosecute, a particular case of suspected wrongdoing for which a conflict of interest exists for the usual prosecuting authority. Other jurisdictions have similar systems. For example, the investigation of an allegation against a sitting president or attorney general might be handled by a special prosecutor rather than by an ordinary prosecutor who would otherwise be in the position of investigating their own superior. Special prosecutors also have handled investigations into those connected to the government but not in a position of direct authority over the Justice Department's prosecutors, such as cabinet secretaries or election campaigns.

The deputy attorney general acts as attorney general during the absence of the attorney general. Lisa Monaco has served in this role since April 21, 2021.

From 2003 until July 2009, Monahan was the Dean of Osgoode Hall Law School at York University. He has written extensively on constitutional reform and public policy, and served as Senior Policy Advisor to former Ontario Premier David Peterson as well as former Ontario Attorney General Ian Scott during the Meech Lake Accord negotiations from 1987-1990. He has appeared as legal counsel in major public law litigation at the Supreme Court of Canada as well as in lower courts. He was a frequent commentator on constitutional and public policy issues in the national media. He received his LL.B. degree from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University, where he graduated as Gold Medalist, and an LL.M. degree from Harvard University. On May 19, 2017 Patrick Monahan was appointed by the federal government of Canada as a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in Toronto.

Rod Jay Rosenstein is an American attorney who served as the 37th United States deputy attorney general from April 2017 until May 2019. Prior to his appointment, he served as a United States attorney for the District of Maryland. At the time of his confirmation as deputy attorney general in April 2017, he was the longest-serving U.S. attorney. Rosenstein had also been nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in 2007, but his nomination was never considered by the U.S. Senate.
