The Survey of India is India's central engineering agency in charge of mapping and surveying. Set up in 1767 to help consolidate the territories of the British East India Company, it is one of the oldest Engineering Departments of the Government of India. Its members are from Survey of India Service cadre of Civil Services of India. It is headed by the Surveyor General of India. At present, the Surveyor General is Hitesh Kumar S. Makwana.

The Surveyor General is also the most senior member of the Survey of India Service, an organised engineering service under the Union of India.
Superintending Surveyor (SS) is a Senior Time Scale Group 'A' engineering post in Survey of India Service, an Organized Engineering Service in Survey of India National Survey Organization under Department of Science and Technology (India). Appointment to this post is made by promotion from Deputy Superintending Surveyor (DSS) which is the entry-level post in the said service & from Officer Surveyor (OS). The total number of vacancies of SS is distributed between DSS of army stream, civil stream & Officer Surveyor.
The Survey of India Service (SIS) is a cadre of the Government of India who prepare the Survey of India. In India, topographical map is published by the Survey of India.
Science and Engineering Research Board is a statutory body under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, established by an Act of the Parliament of India in 2009. The Board was chaired by the Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Science and Technology. The Board was set up for promoting basic research in science and engineering and to provide financial assistance to scientists, academic institutions, R&D laboratories, industrial concerns and other agencies for such research.Thereafter, it was succeeded by Anusandhan National Research Foundation in the year 2024.
