Derek James Monaghan (born 20 January 1959) is an English former footballer who played as a forward for West Bromwich Albion, Port Vale, and Redditch United.

Career

Monaghan started his career at West Bromwich Albion in 1979. During a five-year stay, he scored two goals in nineteen First Division matches. He suffered with knee injuries at The Hawthorns. After two years on the sidelines, he returned to action in time to score a winning goal against Arsenal at Highbury in December 1983; however, he was again struck down by injury a week later. [3] He played under four different managers: Ron Atkinson, Ronnie Allen, Ron Wylie, and Johnny Giles, before joining John Rudge's Port Vale in July 1984. He played seven Fourth Division and two cup games in the 1984–85 season, but suffered badly with injuries. He was given a free transfer in May 1985 and moved on to Redditch United. [4] United won promotion out of the Southern Football League Midland Division in 1985–86.

Post-retirement

After retiring as a footballer, Monaghan set up his own financial consultancy business in Warwickshire. [3]

The 1993 Football League Second Division play-off final was a football match played on 30 May 1993 at Wembley Stadium, London, between Port Vale and West Bromwich Albion to determine the third and final team to gain promotion from the Second Division to the First Division. The top two teams of the 1992–93 Football League Second Division season gained automatic promotion to the First Division, while those placed from third to sixth place in the table took part in play-offs; the winners of the play-off semi-finals competed for the final place for the 1993–94 season in the First Division.

The 1984–85 season was Port Vale's 73rd season of football in the English Football League, and first back in the Fourth Division following their relegation from the Third Division. John Rudge's first full season in charge, the Vale finished in mid-table following a season of rebuilding the squad. The 1985–86 season was Port Vale's 74th season of football in the English Football League, and second-successive season in the Fourth Division. John Rudge achieved his first success as manager, leading Vale to promotion into the Third Division with a fourth-place finish. The club also reached the Second Round in both the FA Cup and League Cup, as well as the Northern Section Semi-finals of the Associate Members' Cup. Rudge signing Andy Jones excelled to become the club's top-scorer, whilst Robbie Earle had another impressive season. However, the promotion campaign was built on the strength of the Vale defence, and goalkeeper Jim Arnold was made Player of the Year.
