The Detroit House of Correction (DeHoCo), opened in 1861, was owned and run by the City of Detroit but originally accepted prisoners from throughout the state including women. This was the first State operated prison for female felons. The state renovated the woman's division into the new Phoenix facility. The Detroit House of Correction was transferred to the state in 1986, renamed to Western Wayne Correctional Facility, and became a women's facility for the rest of its tenure. It closed in December 2004 and all inmates and staff were transferred to the Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti.
The first Detroit House of Correction opened in 1861 near Detroit's Eastern Market. [1]
In 1919, the city of Detroit purchased approximately 1,000 acres (400 ha) in Plymouth Township and Northville Township for approximately US$30(equivalent to $506.37 in 2022) an acre to house a new Detroit House of Correction. A prison camp, with inmates sleeping in tents, was opened in 1920. A permanent US$2,500,000(equivalent to $43,794,821 in 2022) maximum security facility was completed in 1930. [1] [2]
The city of Detroit sold a portion of the complex to the Michigan Department of Corrections in 1979 for US$1,600,000(equivalent to $6,451,353 in 2022), and the remainder of the facility to the department in 1986 for US$6,700,000(equivalent to $17,887,007 in 2022). The facility was then renamed to Western Wayne Correctional Facility and became a women's facility for the rest of its tenure. [1] The 1930 building closed and sat abandoned since. [2]
In the late 1980s, the warden of the facility took bribes in return for favors from inmates. [3]
The facility closed in December 2004 and all inmates and staff were transferred to the Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti.[ citation needed ]
In January 2002, Kojaian Management Corporation purchased the property for US$50,000,000(equivalent to $81,350,601 in 2022). [1]
Plymouth Township acquired 323 acres (131 ha) of the property in September 2011 for US$606,150(equivalent to $788,533 in 2022). The land was available for purchase by the government due to unpaid taxes. [4] [5]
In May 2016, the City of Detroit, is in ownership of 190 acres of the land Plymouth Township acquired. The courts[ which? ] agreed that under Michigan land law,[ citation needed ] the ownership of the property still resides with the City of Detroit.[ citation needed ] The other 133 acres, of the 323 Plymouth Township acquired, was correctly sold, by Detroit, in 2006, to a private developer, who did not pay their land taxes, and forfeited the land to the township. Just to the east of this property, the City of Detroit, owns 45 acres of the original site, where dilapidated prison structures still stood [6] until they were demolished in the spring of 2017. [7]

A western suburb of Detroit, Northville Township is located roughly 27 miles (43.5 km) northwest of downtown Detroit, and 20 miles (32.2 km) northeast of Ann Arbor. As of the 2020 census, the township had a population of 31,758. It is independent of the neighboring city of Northville.
The Cummins Unit is an Arkansas Department of Corrections prison in unincorporated Lincoln County, Arkansas, United States, in the Arkansas Delta region. Michigan State Prison or Jackson State Prison, which opened in 1839, was the first prison in Michigan. After 150 years, the prison was divided, starting in 1988, into four distinct prisons, still in Jackson: the Parnall Correctional Facility which is a minimum-security prison; the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility where prisoners can finish their general education; the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center which is the common point of processing for all male state prisoners sentenced to any Michigan prison; and the Cooper Street Correctional Facility which is the common point for processing of all male state prisoners about to discharge, parole, or enter a community center or the camp program.
The Federal Correctional Institution, Milan is a U.S. federal prison in Michigan, with most of the prison in York Township, and a portion in Milan. It is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility (WHV) is a prison for women located in Pittsfield Township, Michigan, operated by the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC). The three-letter designation for this facility is WHV. It is the only prison in Michigan which houses women.

Ypsilanti, commonly shortened to Ypsi, is a city in Washtenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 census, the city's population was 20,648. The city is bounded to the north by Superior Township and on the west, south, and east by Ypsilanti Township. It is home of Eastern Michigan University. Ypsilanti is the historic site of the Michigan State Normal College, now Eastern Michigan University, the fourth normal school established in the United States. Ypsilanti was home to the historical campus of the Cleary Business College, now Cleary University currently located in Livingston County, Michigan. It is also the location of the first Domino's Pizza restaurant.
Henry Ford's Village Industries were small factories located in rural areas of Michigan. Ford developed his Village Industries in part to provide farm workers a stable source of income during the winter months.
Wayne County Training School, alternately known as the Wayne County Training School for Feeble Minded Children or the Wayne County Child Development Center, was a state-funded institution for people with developmental disabilities, located in Northville Township, Michigan. Construction of the institution began in 1923, and it opened in 1926. Expansion on the property continued until 1930. The school closed its doors on October 18, 1974. Most of the buildings were left abandoned until 1998, when the land was sold and the abandoned institution was demolished after that.
Detroit Reentry Center (RRF), previously the Ryan Correctional Facility, was a prison of the Michigan Department of Corrections located in eastern Detroit, Michigan. It is adjacent to the Detroit Detention Center.
Mound Correctional Facility was a Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) prison located in eastern Detroit, Michigan. It was adjacent to the Detroit Reentry Center. The facility which housed Mound was reopened in August 2013 as the Detroit Detention Center.
Kinross Correctional Facility (KCF) is a Michigan prison for men. It is located in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in Chippewa County on the south side of Kincheloe, adjacent to Chippewa County International Airport. The original facility closed in October 2015, with most of the inmates relocating to the formerly closed Hiawatha Correctional Facility. Upon the move, the Kinross Correctional Facility name was transferred to the reopened complex.
