Dewan Chand is a Indo-Fijian educationist,politician and convicted sex abuser.
Chand had been a secondary school principal,and an active member of the Fiji Teachers Union before joining politics. [1] He was elected to Parliament as a Fiji Labour Party candidate in the 2006 Fijian general election,winning 90% of the votes cast in the Laucala Indian Communal Constituency. [2] He lost his seat when parliament was dissolved following the 2006 Fijian coup d'état.
In October 2009,he was re-elected the northern vice president of Fiji Football Association. [3]
In September 2012 he was convicted on indecent assault and defiling a girl under the age of 13 and sentenced to four years imprisonment. [4] The conviction was upheld on appeal. [5] He was subsequently sacked from the Fiji Football Association. [6]
The politics of Fiji take place within the framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic. Fiji has a multiparty system with the Prime Minister of Fiji as head of government. The executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the Parliament of Fiji. The judiciary is mostly independent of the executive and the legislature.
Mahendra Pal Chaudhry is a Fijian politician and the leader of the Fiji Labour Party. Following a historic election in which he defeated the long-time former leader,Sitiveni Rabuka,the former trade union leader became Fiji's first Indo-Fijian Prime Minister on 19 May 1999,but exactly one year later,on 19 May 2000 he and most of his Cabinet were taken hostage by coup leader George Speight,in the Fiji coup of 2000. Unable to exercise his duties,he and his ministers were sacked by President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara on 27 May;Mara intended to assume emergency powers himself but was himself deposed by the military leader,Commodore Frank Bainimarama.
The Fiji Labour Party,also known as Fiji Labour,is a political party in Fiji. Most of its support is from the Indo-Fijian community,although it is officially multiracial and its first leader was an indigenous Fijian,Dr. Timoci Bavadra. The party has been elected to power twice,with Timoci Bavadra and Mahendra Chaudhry becoming prime minister in 1987 and 1999 respectively. On both occasions,the resulting government was rapidly overthrown by a coup.

A founding member of the Fiji Labour Party,he served as a Cabinet Minister in the government of Timoci Bavadra until removed from office by the 1987 Fijian coups d'état,and then as Deputy Prime Minister of Fiji in the government of Mahendra Chaudhry until removed from office by the 2000 Fijian coup d'état. After splitting with Choudhry in the wake of the coup,he founded the New Labour Unity Party to contest the 2001 election,but failed to win a seat in Parliament. He unsuccessfully attempting to re-enter politics at the 2006 election under the banner of the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua,and again at the 2014 election as part of the Social Democratic Liberal Party.
Josaia Voreqe "Frank" Bainimarama is a Fijian politician and former naval officer who served as the prime minister of Fiji from 2007 until 2022. A member of the FijiFirst party,which he founded in 2014,he began his career as an officer in the Fijian navy and commander of the Fijian military. He served as the opposition leader from 24 December 2022 despite being suspended from Parliament until 8 March 2023,when he resigned and was replaced by Inia Seruiratu.
The National Federation Party is a Fijian political party founded by A.D. Patel in November 1968,as a merger of the Federation Party and the National Democratic Party. Though it claims to represent all Fiji Islanders,it is supported,in practice,almost exclusively by Indo-Fijians whose ancestors had come to Fiji between 1879 and 1916,mostly as indentured labourers. However,in the 2018 general election,the party recorded a considerable change in its support base due to the inclusion of more indigenous Fijian candidates.
Nanise Nagusuca is a former Fijian politician. She was a member of the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua and Social Democratic Liberal parties. She was convicted of sedition in 2017 and sentenced to three years imprisonment.
Chaudhary Devi Lal was an Indian statesman and politician who served as 6th Deputy Prime Minister of India from 1989 to 1990 and from 1990 to 1991. Lal emerged as farmer leader from the state of Haryana,and served as the Chief Minister of Haryana from 1977 to 1979 and then from 1987 to 1989.He was the founder of Indian National Lok Dal. Daniel Urai,also known as Daniel Urai Manufolau,is a Fijian trade unionist and former politician.
General elections were held in Fiji on 17 September 2014 to select the 50 members of Parliament. The FijiFirst party led by Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama won a landslide victory,winning 32 of the 50 seats. The Social Democratic Liberal Party and the National Federation Party were the only other two parties to cross the 5% electoral threshold and win seats.

After serving as Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy,he was appointed as a Minister in the military regime of dictator Frank Bainimarama. He was later appointed commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces,before being elected to the Parliament of Fiji in December 2022.
Agni Deo Singh is an Indo-Fijian trade unionist,politician,and Cabinet Minister. He served as general secretary of the Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) from 1999 to 2006,and again from 2007 to 2022. After being elected to the Parliament of Fiji in the 2022 election,he is currently Minister for Employment,Productivity and Industrial Relations in the coalition government.

Ratu Rakuita Saurara Vakalalabure is a Fijian lawyer and former politician who served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of Fiji from 2001 to 2004. In August 2004 he was convicted of participation in the 2000 Fijian coup d'état and sentenced to six years' imprisonment. He was the son of Ratu Tevita Vakalalabure,who served in both houses of Parliament from the 1970s to the 1990s.
